The position is located in the News and Science Writing Branch (NSWB) of the Office of Communications and Government Relations (OCGR), Office of Science Management and Operations (OSMO), Office of the Director (OD), National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), National Institutes of Health (NIH). The branch serves as the primary office within NIAID for developing communications materials around the Institute's scientific papers and clinical trials.
Duties
If you are selected for this position, you will perform the following duties:
Collaborate with scientists, research staff, or administrative officials to obtain information on basic or clinical research programs for communication to various audiences.
Develop or edit written materials on complex biomedical research activities or scientific subjects, such as research summaries, tip sheets, news releases, articles, or fact sheets.
Coordinate the review or clearance of completed communications materials to ensure accuracy, completeness, or alignment with organizational positions.
Develop strategies to increase the understanding of research programs, initiatives, or policies by news media, constituency groups, or other public audiences.
If you are selected at the GS-12 level, you will essentially perform the same duties as those at the full performance level described above, however, duties are less complex and will be performed under closer supervision with more detailed guidance.
Requirements
- U.S. Citizenship requirement or proof of being a U.S. National must be met by closing date.

Qualifications
To qualify for a Technical Writer-Editor position at the GS-1083-12 level: You must have 1 year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-11 level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector, performing the following types of tasks: creating and editing written and online material on scientific, technical, and health-related topics; preparing written materials to provide information on biomedical research activities and scientific subjects for distribution to various audiences; obtaining information on research programs and findings through discussion with scientific or program staff, or review of scientific literature or databases; and preparing responses to inquiries from various sources regarding research programs or issues.
To qualify for a Technical Writer-Editor position at the GS-1083-13 level: You must have 1 year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-12 level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector, performing the following types of tasks: analyzing research findings to provide others a full understanding of objectives and accomplishments for communication programs; developing summaries, tip and fact sheets, pamphlets and news releases to interpret scientific research and related programs for distribution to the general public; advising senior level staff on communications issues regarding content techniques and distribution mechanisms; and developing strategies and techniques to effectively communicate information on complex biomedical research programs and issues.
