About the Position: U.S. Army Institute of Surgical Research (USAISR), a U.S. Army Medical Research and Development Command (USAMRDC) asset and is collocated with the Brooke Army Military Medical Center (BAMMC), Fort Sam Houston, Texas.

Duties

Select and perform appropriate statistical analyses, writes statistical analysis plans and statistical analysis reports in accordance with the American Statistical Association's Ethical Guidelines for Statistical Practice. Advise researchers in the initiation, development, and review of research plans, protocols, and proposals. Provide consultation to researchers for experimental design, sample size calculations, power analyses, and statistical analysis methods. Assist researchers with interpretation of statistical findings and the preparation of tables and figures for publication. Assesses the statistical and scientific validity of research manuscripts, abstracts, presentations, or technical reports. Develop and/or update work instructions, processes, and procedures for department. Assist in writing abstracts and manuscripts and contribute to the field of combat casualty care. Manage enterprise statistical software updates and distribution of licenses and assist in coordinating distribution of department workload and track progress of projects.

  • Extended Probationary Period: The length of the probationary period for the Engineers and Scientists (DB) Occupational family will be three years.

Qualifications

Who May Apply: US Citizens In order to qualify, you must meet the education and experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application. Additional information about transcripts is in this document. Basic Requirement for Statistician (Medicine): Degree: Bachelor's degree (or higher degree) that included 15 semester hours in statistics (or in mathematics and statistics, provided at least 6 semester hours were in statistics), and 9 additional semester hours in one or more of the following: physical or biological sciences, medicine, education, or engineering; or in the social sciences including demography, history, economics, social welfare, geography, international relations, social or cultural anthropology, health sociology, political science, public administration, psychology, etc. (Note: You must attach a copy of your transcripts.) OR Combination of Education and Experience: Courses as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education. The experience should have included a full range of professional statistical work such as (a) sampling, (b) collecting, computing, and analyzing statistical data, and (c) applying statistical techniques such as measurement of central tendency, dispersion, skewness, sampling error, simple and multiple correlation, analysis of variance, and tests of significance. In addition to meeting the basic requirement above, to qualify for this position you must also meet the qualification requirements listed below: MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes Experience performing statistical analysis for the design and execution of research. Experience utilizing statistical computer software and statistical programming packages such as Statistical Analysis Software (SAS), Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) and/or Data Analysis and Statistical Software (STATA). Experience writing statistical plans and provide written reports of statistical analysis results. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the second lower grade/level position in the federal service (DB-02/GS-12). Its mission is to provide requirements-driven combat casualty care medical solutions and products for injured service members, from self-aid through definitive care across the full spectrum of military operations; provide state-of-the-art trauma, burn, and critical care to Department of Defense beneficiaries around the world and civilians in our trauma region; and provide Burn Special Medical Augmentation Response Teams.

USAISR is participating in an alternative personnel system known as the Personnel Demonstration Project (PDP). The DB-03 payband is equivalent to the GS-13 step 1 to GS- 14 step 10 level. In keeping with the Demonstration pay fixing policies, employees earning a salary that falls within this payband equivalent, may not receive an immediate pay increase (promotion) if appointed to this position. Future pay increases within the payband will be accomplished through the pay for performance management system.
