This notice is issued under direct-hire authority to recruit new talent to occupations for which NIST has a severe shortage of candidates.
Duties
Support programs in microbial metrology under Biosurveillance, Microbiome, and Engineering Biology by developing robust, reproducible bioinformatics workflows to create and evaluate benchmarks. Plans development of microbial reference standards by analyzing and managing many types of metagenomic and genomic data with limited supervision. Requires the consideration of precedents and use of judgment to assess strengths and weaknesses of sequencing methods. The applicant will collaborate with microbial team members and external collaborators to share expertise across different types of 'omics data including metagenomics and metatranscriptomics. The work will advance microbial measurements for the microbiome and pathogen detection programs, with applications in biosurveillance and biotechnology.

Qualifications
Basic Requirements for 0401 Biologist:
Degree: biological sciences, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry, or related disciplines appropriate to the position.
OR
Combination of education and experience: Courses equivalent to a major, as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.
Basic Requirements for 1550 Computer Scientist::
Bachelor's degree in computer science or bachelor's degree with 30 semester hours in a combination of mathematics, statistics, and computer science. At least 15 of the 30 semester hours must have included any combination of statistics and mathematics that included differential and integral calculus. All academic degrees and course work must be from accredited or pre-accredited institutions.
AND
In addition to the basic requirement for both 0401 and 1550:
Applicants must also have 1 year (52 weeks) of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-9 (ZP-II at NIST) level. Specialized Experience is defined as experience developing and running bioinformatics tools for analysis, data management strategies, FAIR data principles, and managing large datasets. Proficiency with metagenomics, R, and python.

3 years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a Ph.D. degree
OR
Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree
OR
A combination of graduate education and specialized experience as defined in the additional requirements
