About the Position: This ensures proper reprocessing, maintenance, and storage of medical equipment and supplies.
Work hours will support the 24/7 hospital mission which includes shift work, extended hours, holidays, and/or weekends, etc. May be a member in charge of a team or a sole worker on weekend/evening/night assignments.

Duties
Operate decontamination equipment.
Receive, inspect, clean, and decontaminate soiled instruments, equipment, and apparatuses according to standard operating procedures and manufacturer instructions.
Use and interpret results from quality assurance monitors for records.
Maintain inventory of sterilized trays, carts and instruments to ensure integrity.
Validate the cleaning of instruments and reusable medical equipment using standard operating procedures, manufacturers instructions, and industry standards.
Requirements
- Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
- This position requires the completion of a pre-employment Physical Examination and an annual examination thereafter to ensure the continued, required level of physical health and ability or fitness to perform the duties of the position.
- May be required to work days, evenings, nights, rotating shifts, extended hours, weekends, holidays or other schedules common to hospital operations. May be member in charge of a team or a sole worker on weekend/evening/night assignments.
- This position is subject to a pre-employment drug screening, and random testing thereafter, to include testing based on reasonable suspicion and testing due to direct involvement with an on-duty accident.
- This position has been designated Mission Essential. In the event of severe weather conditions or other such emergency type situations, the incumbent is required to report to work or remain at work as scheduled to support mission operations.
- Immunization screening is required. Hepatitis B immunization is required for all positions with direct patient contact. Applicants may be required to show proof of other immunizations depending on the type of position.
- This position has mandatory seasonal influenza vaccination requirements and is subject to annual seasonal influenza vaccinations unless otherwise exempted for medical or religious reasons (documentation of exemption must be provided upon hire).
- Incumbent must be able to lift weights up to 45 pounds without assistance and weights over 45 pounds with assistance.
- Employee may be required to wear and use personal protective equipment (PPE) as required and provided by the employer.
- This position requires incumbent to obtain and maintain a favorable result from a National Agency Background Check.
- Position is designated as Inclement Weather Essential. The incumbent must make every attempt to report for work on time and/or remain on duty during severe weather conditions.
- This position requires the incumbent to have tuberculosis testing.

In order to qualify, you must meet the specialized experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes advising medical personnel on the proper use of medical equipment; selecting, using or adjusting various washer sterilizers, ultrasonic instrument cleaners, hydrogen peroxide or steam sterilizers; and/or applying aseptic techniques to process, assemble, troubleshoot, clean, decontaminate, sterilize, prepare, issue or store medical instruments, equipment or supplies.
This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-06).
Education: Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. For this job, you must meet the qualification requirement using experience alone--no substitution of education for experience is permitted.
A Certified Registered Central Service Technician (CRCST) or a Certified Sterile Processing and Distribution Technician (CSPDT) is preferred.
