The primary purpose of this position is to gather, organize, preserve, and present documentary materials and disseminate historical information about the Air Force and its programs.

Duties

Performs advanced professional archival research and reference services. Ensures the collecting, accessioning, and archiving of historically significant materials meets command and professional standards. Performs a variety of duties in History, research and reference services. Answers requests for historical information requiring complex research in multiple sources. Disseminates historical information through the preparation of finding aids. Assists in maintaining archives. Carries out special assignments. Performing archival conservation and preservation work on the historic collections at the agency.

  • Travel by regularly scheduled. commercial or military conveyance in accordance with Joint Travel Regulations may be required in performance of TDY.
  • Required to walk two flights of stairs carrying boxes of documents weighing up to 15 pounds.
  • This is a drug testing designated position. The incumbent is subject to random testing for drug use.
  • This is a Mission Essential (ME) position performing a Mission Critical Function (MCF) which must continue uninterrupted after the occurrence of an (cont'd)

Qualifications

In order to qualify, you must meet the experience requirements described in the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualification Standards for General Schedule Professional and Scientific Positions for Archivist Series, 1420. BASIC REQUIREMENT OR INDIVIDUAL OCCUPATIONAL REQUIREMENT: Bachelor's degree in archival science or bachelor's degree with a major that includes 18 semester hours in archival science, history and/or in political science or government, and 12 semester hours in one or any combination of the following: archival science, history, American civilization, economics, political science, public administration, or government. OR Combination of education and experience - at least 30 semester hours that included courses as shown above, plus appropriate experience or additional education. In addition to meeting the basic requirement above, to qualify for this position you must also meet the qualification requirements listed below: SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: Applicants must have at least one (1) year of specialized experience at the next lower grade GS-09, or equivalent in other pay systems. Examples of specialized experience includes knowledge of the arrangement, content, and servicing of historical collections and working knowledge of other collections and procedures used to access them. Knowledge of general archival principles and procedures. Knowledge of methods, procedures and techniques used to assist researchers and staff members in locating and retrieving documents, microfilm, audio tapes, and other archival materials. Note: You must submit a copy of your transcripts. OR EDUCATION: Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree or 3 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree in a field which demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of the position. NOTE: You must submit a copy of your transcripts. OR COMBINATION OF EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. NOTE: You must submit a copy of your transcripts. FEDERAL TIME-IN-GRADE (TIG) REQUIREMENT FOR GENERAL SCHEDULE (GS) POSITIONS: Merit promotion applicants must meet applicable time-in-grade requirements to be considered eligible. One year at the GS-09 level is required to meet the time-in-grade requirements for the GS-11 level. TIG applies if you are in a current GS position or held a GS position within the previous 52 weeks. NOTE: Applicants applying as VEOA candidates who are current GS civil service employees or are prior GS civil service employees within the past 52 weeks must also meet time-in-grade requirements. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (KSAs): Your qualifications will be evaluated on the basis of your level of knowledge, skills, abilities and/or competencies in the following areas: Knowledge of the arrangement, content, servicing of historical collections and working knowledge of other collections and procedures used to access them. Knowledge of general archival principles and procedures. Knowledge of methods, procedures and techniques used to assist researchers and staff members in locating and retrieving documents, microfilm, audio tapes, and other archival materials. A working knowledge of protection methods used for historical documents. Skill in organizing information in a logical and easily understood manner for use by researchers. Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing. Ability to work with a wide variety of professional and senior personnel in areas requiring sensitivity and tact. PART-TIME OR UNPAID EXPERIENCE: Credit will be given for appropriate unpaid and or part-time work. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week. VOLUNTEER WORK EXPERIENCE: Refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service Programs (i.e., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student and social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge and skills that can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
