The primary purpose of this position is to serve as the Digital Archivist of the Air Force Historical Research Agency (AFHRA) and Functional Area Liaison for the agency and Department of the Air Force History and Museums Program (DAFHMP) and primary point of contact with Headquarters Air Force concerning digital archives and non-digital archives.
Duties
Implements digital archival policy and procedures for the Department of the Air Force History and Museums Program (DAFHMP).
Assists the AFHRA Director in the implementation and the AFHMP digital archival program including serving as functional area liaison for AFHRA and AF field archivists.
Develops definitive analytical digital finding aids for selected groups or series of digital records pertinent to Air Force and Space Force operations across a wide spectrum of activities.
Performs advanced professional archival research and reference services.

Qualifications
In order to qualify, you must meet the specialized experience requirements described in the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualification Standards for General Schedule Professional and Scientific Positions, Archivist Series, 1420.
BASIC REQUIREMENT OR INDIVIDUAL OCCUPATIONAL REQUIREMENT:
Bachelor's degree in archival science or bachelor's degree with a major that includes 18 semester hours in archival science, history and/or in political science or government, and 12 semester hours in one or any combination of the following: archival science, history, American civilization, economics, political science, public administration, or government.
OR
Combination of education and experience - at least 30 semester hours that included courses as shown above, plus appropriate experience or additional education. The following are illustrative of kinds of experience that may be accepted as meeting the professional experience requirements: (1) experience as an archivist in Federal, state, religious institution, business, or other archives, or in manuscript depositories, and (2) experience of an archival nature that involved research in archival science, or in a directly related field such as history, government, economics, political science, international relations, or international law.
In addition to meeting the basic requirement above, to qualify for this position you must also meet the qualification requirements listed below:
SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: Applicants must have at least one (1) year of specialized experience at the next lower grade GS-11, or equivalent in other pay systems. Examples of specialized experience includes mastery of knowledge in digital archives management and archival theory, principles, ethics, methods, techniques, automated information systems, and their applications to a variety of archival and library situations. Knowledge of Air Force, Space Force, and other archival collections in related subject matter in order to achieve complete coverage of significant archival sources when providing reference and research service in response to requests. Knowledge of the principles and methods of historical research and writing to prepare historical products that significantly interpret, analyze, or develop the history of the Department of the Air Force, the United States Space Force, and their policies and programs. Mastery of knowledge about the physical characteristics of documents and how they influence the value, acquisition, preservation, and use of document provenance and collections. Significant knowledge of major elements of Department of the Air Force history such as aviation, aerospace, air power, space power, and/or military history. Extensive knowledge of available sources of historical information and the search and retrieval techniques of commercial and federal sources to locate sometimes obscure historical material. Knowledge of library reference and referral functions, including library automation systems and technology, to solve complex reference inquiries. Knowledge of Department of the Air Force Instructions, policy, and other guidance related to the Department of the Air Force History Program Knowledge of functional requirements of system design, and awareness of current and future needs, to develop functional requirements for systems appropriate to the research requirements of a professional historian's user needs.
FEDERAL TIME-IN-GRADE (TIG) REQUIREMENT FOR GENERAL SCHEDULE (GS) POSITIONS: Merit promotion applicants must meet applicable time-in-grade requirements to be considered eligible. One year at the GS-11 level is required to meet the time-in-grade requirements for the GS-12 level. TIG applies if you are in a current GS position or held a GS position within the previous 52 weeks. NOTE: Applicants applying as VEOA candidates who are current GS civil service employees or are prior GS civil service employees within the past 52 weeks must also meet time-in-grade requirements.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (KSAs): Your qualifications will be evaluated on the basis of your level of knowledge, skills, abilities and/or competencies in the following areas:
Knowledge and understanding of archival theory, principles, ethics, methods, techniques, automated information systems, and their applications to a variety of archival and library situations.
Knowledge of professional historical principles, concepts, methodology, and techniques, including scholarly, historical, archival and organizational research.
Knowledge of Air Force and Space Force and other Department of Defense archival collections in related subject matter in order to achieve complete coverage of significant archival sources when providing reference and research service in response to requests.
Knowledge of U.S. history, military history, military aerospace history, and military space history.
Ability to perform extensive historical research in a wide variety of sources, critically evaluate and analyze sources of information, organize and synthesize documents and other research materials, and present written findings in a scholarly and coherent manner.
Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing. Ability to maintain good working relations with officials from a variety of organizations, historians in subordinate offices, coworkers, contractors, scholarly colleagues, editors, researchers, and the public.
PART-TIME OR UNPAID EXPERIENCE: Credit will be given for appropriate unpaid and or part-time work. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week.
VOLUNTEER WORK EXPERIENCE: Refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service Programs (i.e., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student and social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge and skills that can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
