This position is part of the Office of Management, Department of Energy. As a Industrial Hygienist, you will develop industrial hygiene programs for the DOE headquarters locations to assist the Director, Office of Industrial Hygiene and Safety, performing various duties related to the recognition, evaluation, and control of safety, biological, chemical, ergonomic, environmental, and physical hazards.

• This position has been designated as a Tier 5 and requires a security clearance at the Q level. The incumbent is required to obtain and maintain this clearance level; failure to do so may result in separation from federal service.

Qualifications

BASIC REQUIREMENT: The education must be accredited by an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education(external link) at the time the degree was obtained. Applicants must meet one of the following requirements: A bachelor's or graduate/higher level degree in industrial hygiene, occupational health sciences, occupational and environmental health, toxicology, safety sciences, or related science; or A bachelor's degree in a branch of engineering, physical science, or life science that included 12 semester hours in chemistry, including organic chemistry, and 18 additional semester hours of courses in any combination of chemistry, physics, engineering, health physics, environmental health, biostatistics, biology, physiology, toxicology, epidemiology, or industrial hygiene; or Certification from the American Board of Industrial Hygiene(external link) (ABIH). Courses in the history or teaching of chemistry are not acceptable. NOTE: All applicants MUST submit transcripts as verification of educational requirement by the closing date of this announcement. SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS: A qualified candidate's online application and resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-13 level. Specialized experience for this position is defined as meeting ALL of the following: Implementing worker safety and health programs, recommending measures to eliminate or control occupational health hazards to meet federal, state, local, and agency regulatory requirements. Providing advice during investigations of alleged violations of worker health and safety requirements. Evaluating results of investigations and preparing technical assessments. Making recommendations for abatement actions, enforcement actions, or policy changes. "Experience" refers to paid and unpaid experience. Examples of qualifying unpaid experience may include: volunteer work done through National Service programs (such as Peace Corps and AmeriCorps); as well as work for other community-based philanthropic and social organizations. Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills; and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
