Duties

Direct 3 or more crew members (including a driver-operator) assigned to a shift in structural/airfield firefighting activities and fire related rescue missions. Assign station maintenance work such as cleaning equipment, maintaining fire fighting apparatus and equipment of the fire station, and grounds surrounding the fire station. Perform a variety of fire fighting, hazardous material response, and related aid and rescue work associated with buildings, shops, warehouses, storage areas, and light aircraft. Perform initial and on-going focused patient assessment and physical examination. Take, record, and monitor patient's baseline vital signs including temperature, blood pressure, and pulse. Manage respiratory and cardiac emergencies to include performing cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) or automatic external defibrillation (AED). Direct and participate with training firefighters in firefighting and fire prevention techniques and procedures according to the department's training program. Respond to alarms and fight fires requiring the full performance of firefighting tasks of moderate difficulty involving structures, equipment and facilities; crashed and burning aircraft; and fuel, chemical, and brush fires.

Requirements

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • This position requires the completion of pre-employment and periodic subsequent medical examination in accordance with DoDM 6055.06 to ensure continued, required level of physical health and ability or fitness to perform the duties of the position.
  • This position has a requirement to lift 45 lbs. or more in the regular performance of duties.
  • The duties of this position meet the criteria for compliance with Federal and Department of the Army Drug Free Workplace Programs. Detection of the presence of drugs is warranted.
  • This position is subject to a pre-employment screening, and random testing thereafter, to include testing based on reasonable suspicion and testing due to direct involvement with an on-duty accident.
  • This position has been designated Mission Essential. In the event of severe weather conditions or other such emergency type situations the incumbent is required to report to work or remain at work as scheduled to support mission operations.
  • The duties of this position require the incumbent to possess or obtain and maintain a valid state Driver's License in one of the 50 U.S. states or possessions to operate vehicles.
  • Incumbent will successfully complete an initial program of classroom or on-the-job training covering hazardous waste management as well as annual renewal training.
  • Required to participate in a physical fitness program.
  • During rescue operations, incumbent may come into contact with human blood or other potential infectious materials which may result in possible exposure to blood borne pathogens.
  • Employee must remain clean-shaven to insure integrity of mask fit for breathing apparatus.
  • Work may require travel away from the normal duty station on military or commercial aircraft 5% of the time.
  • The incumbent works a minimum of a 72 hour week.
  • Incumbent is on call 24 hours a day, 7 days a week unless TDY or on leave.
  • One year probationary period.

This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-07). Selective Placement Factors: 1. This position requires the incumbent to possess and maintain ALL of the following Department of Defense, IFSAC, or Pro-Board: Fire Officer I, Fire Instructor I, Fire Inspector I, HAZMAT Technician, and Airport Fire Fighter. (You MUST upload a copy of your certifications in order to be rated qualified). 2. This position requires the incumbent to possess and maintain a New York State Emergency Medical Technician - Basic (or equivalent or higher) certification such as a National Registry Emergency Medical Technician - Basic (NREMT-B) certification.
