Duties
This Writer Editor position is located in the Office of the Executive Secretariat, Front Office (FO), Chief of Staff (CS), Transportation Security Administration (TSA), Department of Homeland Security (DHS). Duties include but are not limited to:
Writes and edits high-quality products that effectively explain and interpret the Agency's stance on various transportation security issues. Uses and provides guidance to program offices on word processing, desktop publishing, and electronic publishing programs/systems.
Serves as the primary writer/editor supporting the researching, writing, editing, and coordinating of materials for signature by Transportation Security Administration (TSA) management officials. Ensures proper format, punctuation, spelling and grammar; reviews and approves proposed publications for style, design, and similar editorial characteristics before release for printing, publication, or dissemination.
Acts as editorial advisor to program analysts and personnel in the Agency for condolence, retirement, and employee recognition correspondence signed by the Administrator in addition to other correspondence signed by TSA management officials.
Participates in TSA teams to review writing and editorial policies and guidelines, resolve style and editorial differences, and make recommendations for updating these requirements consistent with office priorities, program needs, and federal plain language best practices.
The major duties described above reflect the full performance level of this position. Typically, the lower pay bands (H Band) perform the same duties but will receive more guidance and training; and/or projects/work assignments may be less complex.
Qualifications
To qualify for the SV-H Pay Band (equivalent to GS-12), you must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to SV-G Pay Band or GS-11 in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private sector. Specialized experience is defined as experience that has equipped you with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the duties of the position. Such experience is defined as:
Writing and editing content of reports, publications, directives, newsletters, press releases, correspondence, position papers, articles for publication, and other information products; and
Advising individually or on working groups about matters relating to the development of written material in support of organizational missions, functions, processes, and procedures; and
Applying guidance from a published style guide, such as Government Publishing Office (GPO) Style Manual, Chicago Manual of Style, or the Gregg Reference Manual as well as federal plain language standards, to a variety of written products to ensure consistency, accuracy, and readability of written documents as well as grammatical correctness.

Credit for experience is given based on a 40-hour workweek. Part-time experience is credited on a part-time ratio, i.e., working 20 hours per week for two months equals one month of experience. No additional credit is given for overtime.
National Service Experience (i.e., volunteer experience): Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
The Office of Personnel Management (OPM) must authorize employment offers made to current or former political appointees.
