You will serve as a MICROBIOLOGIST in the Viral Department (VD), Infectious Diseases Directorate (IDD) of NAVMEDRSCHCEN SILVER SPRING MD. This announcement uses the Expansion of Direct Hire Authority for Certain Personnel of the Department of Defense of the Department of Defense to recruit and appoint qualified candidates to certain positions in the competitive service.

Duties

You will play a vital role in the planning, execution and reporting of results of experiments in this broad area. You will manage all day-to-day tasks and overseeing all personnel working within the laboratory spaces. You will provide leadership and input into the day-to-day operation of the scientific instrumentation and facilities within the Viral Department utilizing knowledge and skills gained from combined laboratory research and managerial experience. You will keep abreast of the state of scientific developments and the suitability of the procedures. You will assist in the development and execution of scientific projects and experimental protocols.

Qualifications

In order to qualify for this position, your resume must provide sufficient experience and/or education, knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the duties of the specific position for which you are being considered. Degree: microbiology; or biology, chemistry, or basic medical science that included at least 20 semester hours in microbiology and other subjects related to the study of microorganisms, and 20 semester hours in the physical and mathematical sciences combining course work in organic chemistry or biochemistry, physics, and college algebra, or their equivalent. OR 2. Combination of education and experience: courses equivalent to a major in microbiology, biology, chemistry, or basic medical science that included courses as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education. NOTE: POSITIVE EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS: This position has a Positive Education Requirement. In order to verify that you meet the positive education qualifications for this position, you MUST submit a complete copy of transcripts Failure to submit this information WILL result in an ineligible rating. In addition to MEETING the Basic Requirements for this position, your resume must also demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-11 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. Specialized experience must demonstrate the following: Utilizing a wide range of concepts, principles, practices, and methodology commonly used in the field of virology and viral diseases to develop vaccines/therapeutics to protect the warfighter against viral pathogens; Using microbiological concepts, principles, practices, and methodology to perform tasks as the task relate to working with wide range of pathogenic viruses and virus-like particles - (e.g., particularly those of military interest), - to include but not limited to Dengue, Chikungunya, Influenza, severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV2), Hantavirus, and Middle East respiratory syndrome coronavirus (MERS-CoV); Performing microbiological laboratory procedures with regard to in vitro cell culture and molecular biological techniques and in vivo animal studies (including both rodent and non-human primate models), which are used to validate several virological and molecular assays); Using essential instrumentation to support ongoing microbiological processes such as: Bio-Rad Digital Droplet Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR); Sartorius Octet Red, Perkin Elmer Celigo, Thermo CellInsight CX5, and Bio-Rad NGC Chromatography System; Utilizing specialized software such as Flowjo for Fluorescence-activated cell sorting (FACS) analysis, database management, archiving and retrieval of clinical/animal tissue samples as required. Education

There is no substitution of education for specialized experience for the 0403 series at the GS-12 grade level.

For Graduate Level Education: Microbiology, or specific area of study such as bacteriology, virology, mycology, algology, protozoology, parasitology, immunology, serology, microbial genetics, or soil microbiology; or specific applied fields of microbiology such as clinical and public health microbiology, food technology, production processes, industrial fermentation, pollution, etc. Graduate study in related fields such as experimental pathology, infectious diseases, epidemiology, biochemistry, animal or plant physiology, genetics, plant pathology, and insect disease control, may also be pertinent, provided it has direct application to microbiological work.

Education completed in foreign colleges or universities may be used to meet the qualification requirements if the applicant can provide documentation indicating that the foreign education is comparable to that received in an accredited educational institution in the United States.
