This position is part of the National Archives and Records Administration. Incumbent serves as an Archives Technician in the Records Retrieval Branch of the National Personnel Records Center's Military Personnel Records facility. Incumbent performs numerous activities involved in the search, retrieval, refile, and maintenance of personnel and related records.
Duties
As an Archives Technician, you will:
- Use automated production systems, inputs data and prepares system queries of various types of pending search requests to create logical batches of search requests, taking into consideration the complexity of the requests, the priority of the requests, the Center's queue discipline, and the location of the responsive records.
- Search and retrieve from holdings responsive records needed to support the order fulfillment process.
- Examine record contents to determine the veteran's date of release from service obligation and determines legal custodian of record (archival or not) based on this examination.
- Perform trouble-shooting activities to locate the responsive record in instances where the initial search attempt failed to produce the responsive record.
Qualifications
You must meet the following requirements by the closing date of this announcement.
This position requires candidates to pass a physical abilities test designed to measure candidates' ability to perform the physical requirements of the job. The test requires carrying 30-50 pound boxes like those found on the job. It also requires bending, squatting, and walking to reach the boxes in addition to climbing and balancing on a pulpit ladder up to 15 feet high.
For the GS-4, you must have one year of general experience which includes progressively responsible clerical, office, or other work that indicates ability to acquire the particular knowledge and skills needed to perform the duties of the position to be filled.

2 years of education above high school.

Combination of general experience and education.

Education Requirements: The education generally must be from an accredited (or pre-accredited) college or university recognized by the U.S. Department of Education.
