Joining the Secret Service, Office of Training, James J. Rowley Training Center will allow you to plan and deliver training courses, determine approaches and methodology to achieve canine and handler training goals while working with a team of subject matter experts. This Canine Training Specialist position starts at a salary of $112,015 (GS-13, step 1), with promotion potential to $145,617 (GS-13, step 10). The selectee will serve as Canine Training Specialist in the Office of Training, James J. Rowley Training Center in Laurel MD. Typical work assignments include:

  • U.S. citizenship is required.
  • Males born after 12/31/1959 must be registered for Selective Service.
  • You must successfully pass a background investigation.

Qualifications

You qualify for the GS-13 level (starting salary $112,015) if you possess one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-12 level performing duties such as:  Developing and delivering seminars on advanced canine training techniques related to handling and detecting explosives with canines Establishing the operating standards, training requirements, and skill sets for United States Secret Service canine handlers to support investigative and defense mission Ensuring that the course material and materials given remain in touch with the reality of the environment, of law enforcement procedures as they pertain to canine operations is required Selective Placement Factor: In addition to the minimum qualifications described above, you must meet the following requirement(s) to be considered qualified for the position: Must possess at least two (2) years of current experience as a canine trainer/instructor at a Federal, state, county or local law enforcement agency or military. You must possess two of the three certifications below: Trainer/instructor certification in Canine Explosive Detection from an accredited agency, nationally recognized law enforcement canine organization, or canine industry recognized and respected civilian vendor (e.g. Vohne Liche Kennels, Houston K9 Academy, Global K9, Alderhorst International Police K-9 Academy, or similar. In lieu of the certification above, a DoD Kennel Master certification, paired with military special operations assignment(s), meets the certification requirement.) Trainer/instructor certification in Tactical Canine Patrol/ERT/SWAT from an accredited agency, nationally recognized law enforcement canine organization, or canine industry recognized and respected civilian vendor. Trainer/instructor certification in Person Borne Explosive K9 Detection from an accredited agency, nationally recognized law enforcement canine organization, or canine industry recognized and respected civilian vendor. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. The qualification requirements listed above must be met by the closing date of this announcement.Current or Former Political Appointees: The Office of Personnel Management (OPM) must authorize employment offers made to current or former political appointees. If you are currently, or have been within the last 5 years, a political Schedule A, Schedule C, Non-career SES or Presidential Appointee employee in the Executive Branch, you must disclose this information to the Human Resources Office.
