THIS IS A NATIONAL GUARD TITLE 32 EXCEPTED SERVICE POSITION. This National Guard position is for a Safety and Occupational Health Specialist, Position Description Number D1135000 and is part of the GA - GGTC, located at Fort Stewart, Georgia. This is a full-time, Excepted Permanent, dual status position which requires Georgia Army National Guard Membership. Area of Consideration: Open to current members of the Georgia Army National Guard.

Duties

As a Safety and Occupational Health Specialist, GS-0018-09 you will: Participate in the administration of the safety and occupational health program for ground and explosive safety to control or eliminate unsafe behaviors and hazards in accordance with DOD, Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), State and National Guard Bureau (NGB) safety regulations and standards. Review assigned accident/incident reports related to ground and explosive property damage and/or personnel injuries, including non-flying aircraft mishaps. Provide safety related expertise on surveys, inspections and evaluations of unit facilities, shops, and activities related to elimination of hazards that are applicable to aircraft operations, civil engineering, explosive safety, motor vehicle maintenance, contractor operations, etc. Participate in inspections and evaluations related to all ARNG functions to include aircraft servicing operations involving high hazard activities such as egress exercises, emergency fire fighting procedure, aircraft maintenance support, aircraft loading procedures and fuel servicing, and munitions transportation of explosives. Recommend corrective measures to eliminate unsafe work practices. Perform construction site inspections of facilities and contractor personnel operating on the AAF and/or ARNG Training Center to determine compliance with applicable safety and health code requirements. Provide guidance in the prevention, reduction, or elimination of associated hazardous exposure. Participate with the State Safety and Occupational Health Manager in conducting human factor studies to discover mishap and hazardous conditions causes and relationships in order to reduce or prevent their severity. Prepare and conduct safety training classes for supervisors and employees. Evaluate the adequacy and effectiveness of safety training carried out by supervisors to ensure compliance with OSHA mandatory programs. Conduct promotional campaigns to stimulate interest in accident prevention. Assist managers with specialized safety programs, including industrial, sports and recreation, automobile, motorcycle, and manual lifting safety. Maintain accident/injury records, review reports, and other data to detect common patterns and trends. File and maintain safety and occupational health related records, reports, correspondence, publications, and regulatory information. Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Military Grades: SFC-MSG Compatible Military Assignments: ENL: 42 GENERAL EXPERIENCE: Undergraduate and Graduate Education: Major study -- safety or occupational health fields (safety, occupational health, industrial hygiene), or degree in other related fields that included or was supplemented by at least 24 semester hours of study from among the following (or closely related) disciplines: safety, occupational health, industrial hygiene, occupational medicine, toxicology, public health, mathematics, physics, chemistry, biological sciences, engineering, and industrial psychology. OR Experience in scientific or technical work that provided an understanding of the basic principles and concepts of the safety and occupational health field. Creditable general experience must have demonstrated the achievement of knowledge equivalent to the education described above. SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: Must have at least 24 months experience, education or training in or related to safety and occupational health that provided the specific knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position.

Education

Substitution of Education for Specialized Experience - Successful completion of all requirements for a master's or an equivalent degree, or two full academic years of graduate education, which is safety and occupational health management or safety engineering, industrial engineering or directly related fields such as Industrial Hygiene, Fire Prevention Engineering or Industrial Psychology. To be creditable, applicants must submit transcripts, diplomas or other forms of completion certificates to provide verification of courses.
