Bay Pines VA Medical Center is looking for a Geriatric Clinical Specialist Physical Therapist (PT) for the Community Living Center (CLC) interdisciplinary team. Primary duties are to provide consult to Physical Therapists, doctoral interns, PT trainees, and Community Living Center (CLC) staff in evaluating and treating patients based on knowledge and experience in the specialized content area of geriatric physical therapy.
Duties
This position is for a Physical Therapist (PT) - Geriatric Clinical Specialist and is located in the Physical Therapy (PT) Section of the Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Service (PM&RS). The duties and responsibilities of this position are carried out throughout the VA Hospital and associated clinics including various clinical, administrative and patient care areas associated with PM&RS.
The incumbent's primary function is direct patient/client care. He/she has advanced knowledge of contemporary Physical Therapy across multiple areas of practice gained through completion of rotations within the various PT clinics or outside facility experience, and the demonstrated ability to apply this advanced knowledge to provide clinical guidance to Staff Physical Therapists, PT residents, and PT interns.
The PT will provide Geriatric Rehabilitation specialty services within Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Service's (PM&RS) Department of Physical Therapy. As a Clinical Specialist he/she collaborates with other clinicians, Veterans and families regarding the evaluation and treatment of patients, community services, assistive technology and equipment needs for older adult rehabilitation. The incumbent is required to apply advanced evaluation methodologies to the treatment of geriatric patients with musculoskeletal, neuromuscular, cardiovascular, pulmonary, integumentary, or cognitive impairments as well as preventative physical therapy management of healthy elders. The incumbent will serve as a subject matter expert in the field of geriatric rehabilitation science and provide training and education to facility staff, as well as serve as a consultant for interdisciplinary teams and committees pertaining to the geriatric patient population.

Qualifications
Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met.
Basic Requirements:
United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
English Language Proficiency: Physical Therapists must be proficient in spoken and written English as required by 38 U.S.C. 7402(d).
Education and Experience: Physical Therapists must meet one of the education/experience requirements below:
Bachelor's degree in Physical Therapy AND five (5) years of progressively independent experience as a physical therapist; OR
Master's degree in Physical Therapy AND two (2) years of progressively independent experience as a physical therapist; OR
Doctorate degree in physical therapy.
NOTE: Individuals must be a graduate of a Commission on Accreditation in Physical Therapy Education (CAPTE) accredited college or university. Foreign Graduates- Graduates of foreign physical therapy programs meet the requirements in subparagraph 3b if they have a full unrestricted and current license to practice physical therapy in a State, Territory or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia.
License: Individuals must hold a full, current, and unrestricted license to practice physical therapy in a State, Territory or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia. Loss of Credential. A PT who fails to maintain the required license must be removed from the occupation, which may result in termination of employment. At the discretion of the appointing official, an employee may be reassigned to another occupation, if qualified, and if a placement opportunity exists.
May qualify based on being covered by the Grandfathering Provision as described in the VA Qualification Standard for this occupation (only applicable to current VHA employees who are in this occupation and meet the criteria).
Grade Determinations: In addition to the basic requirements above, you must also meet one of the following grade requirements for a specific grade level.
GS-13: Physical Therapist (Clinical Specialist) Geriatrics
Experience: One year of progressively complex experience equivalent to the GS-12 grade level AND one of the following:
Evidence of minimum of 2,000 hours of clinical practice directly in Geriatrics. This time must be between the past two and five years; OR
Board Certification in Geriatrics recognized by the ABPTS; OR
Completion of a Geriatrics fellowship program; OR
An additional advanced degree in a related field.
In addition to the above you must also demonstrate the following Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Advanced knowledge and expert skill in a range of specialized interventions and treatment modalities used in Geriatrics.
Ability to serve as a consultant and subject matter expert for health care providers regarding the delivery of care in Geriatrics.
Ability to teach in mentor medical staff in a specialized content area (Geriatrics) of physical therapy.
Ability to guide the work of a multidisciplinary team in Geriatrics.
Advanced knowledge and export skill to perform and interpret specialized procedures and tests in evaluating the treatment outcomes in Geriatrics.
Preferred Experience:
Board Specialty/Clinical Specialization in Geriatric physical therapy.
3 years of clinical experience working with aging adult patient population preferred.

Physical Requirements: The work demands periods of intense concentration in planning, analyzing, coordination, and execution. It is primarily sedentary with some slight physical efforts required. Day-to-day work involves sitting, walking, standing and carrying light to moderate objects, such as telehealth machines and related components. Work may be performed in a clinical setting that exposes the incumbent to the communicable diseases common of the client population. Some work is performed in a setting away from the office, where the environment cannot be controlled.
