You will serve as a Paralegal Specialist the Office of the Judge Advocate General (OJAG), Commander Naval Legal Services, Naval Legal Assistance Department provides no-cost and confidential legal counsel to persons eligible for 10 U.S.C. § 1044 legal services, including victims of domestic violence offenses and other crimes in order to advise, educate and advocate for the victims. The duty station is Jacksonville, FL

Duties

You will prepare legal documents (such as pleadings, motions) requiring independent legal research and analysis for domestic violence, civilian and military protective orders. You will maintain and manage client case files, maintain case management systems for services provided and conflicts checks. You will ensure timely, accurate preparation and submission of correspondence and reports. You will review the court-martial docket and update attorneys on case deadlines. You will create and maintain database spreadsheets using tools such as Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Access, and other internal data collection programs for statistical purposes. You will assist with maintaining appointment calendars for attorneys and independently schedule appointments as directed by the Department Head or individual Legal Assistance attorneys. You will perform monthly quality review to ensure services have been properly entered by office staff and provide various reports to the RLSO LA Department head and supervising attorney as needed. You will assist RLSO LA Staff with confidential screenings to determine client eligibility, client intake, and check-in. You will apply the appropriate federal, DON, DoD rules and procedures to prevent release of information to unauthorized persons. You will prepare command brochures, handouts, presentation briefings, reports, and other document as directed using tools such as Microsoft word, PowerPoint, Excel, Access and SharePoint among other databases. You will provide notarial services as needed by RLSO LA Attorneys as part of the representation of clients and eligible customers. You will maintain electronic and hard copy office files and ensure appropriate retention and destruction of files. You will assist RLSO LA Attorneys with client and witness interviews.

Qualifications

For the GS-11 level your resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade level (GS-09) or pay band in the federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector applying advanced knowledge of legal principles and concepts to interpret a body of law, regulations, precedents, and practices in support of legal proceedings and action for an organization and/or its clients. Specialized experience must demonstrate performing duties such as: 1) Managing attorney case files and case management systems for victims' rights and victim advocacy issues such as domestic violence, sexual assault, and protective orders services. 2) Conducting independent legal research and analysis using systems such as LEXIS NEXIS, WESTLAW, and/or similar 3) Preparing and reviewing legal correspondence, pleadings, case summaries, and other legal documents to verify factual and legal content, legal sufficiency, and admissibility in court related to victims' rights and victim advocacy issues. 4) Assisting in interviewing clients to obtain and verify information 5) Using law office management principles and law office organization to organize a law office filing system and the assist in organizing the daily office routing for maximum efficiency 6) Preparing legal briefs and summaries of analyses For the GS-09 level your resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade level (GS-07) or pay band in the federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector applying advanced knowledge of legal principles and concepts to interpret a body of law, regulations, precedents, and practices in support of trial proceedings for an organization to perform the following: 1) Conducting legal research using electronic databases, including LEXIS, WESTLAW, or similar 2) Assisting in interviewing clients to obtain and verify information 3) Preparing legal correspondence 4) Evaluating instructions, state and federal statutes and regulations 5) Assisting in preparing legal briefs and summaries of analyses You may also qualify using education to substitute for specialized experience, See the "Education" section of this announcement for details. Education

In lieu of specialized experience, you may qualify with the following education or combination of both education and experience:
For the GS-11 Level:
Have successfully completed a Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree.
OR
Have successfully completed three full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a Ph.D. or equivalent degree.
OR
Have successfully completed an LL.M. degree that is related to the position being filled.
OR
Have a combination of experience and graduate education.

For the GS-09 Level:
Have successfully completed a master's or equivalent graduate degree.
OR
Have successfully completed two full years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to a master's degree.
OR
Have obtained an LL.B. or J.D. that is related to the position being filled.
OR
Have a combination of experience and graduate education.
