The incumbent is a Supervisory Social Worker who works in the Social Work Service under the Chief, Social Work Service or designee primarily responsible for acute inpatient medicine and surgery sections located at the Gainesville VA Medical Center and Lake City VA Medical Center within the North Florida South Georgia Veterans Health System (NFSGVHS).
Duties
Duties:
The incumbent works closely with a higher level supervisory social worker to manage all clinical, operational and administrative aspects of clinical social work practice, as well as support facility initiatives within the Acute Care Medicine/Surgery Units located 45 minutes apart between both the Gainesville VA Medical Center and Lake City VA Medical Centers.
Responsible for social work practice, ensuring social work staff are properly trained and have related competencies to perform their work at the top of their clinical license. Clinical social work practice should be performed within appropriate Scope of Practice or Privileges.
Supervises 18 entry level and journeyman social workers across the two medical center campuses.
Works closely with their supervisor to ensure all aspects of clinical training, licensure supervision, patient flow initiatives, interdisciplinary team collaboration and other work related to Acute Care Medicine/Surgery are performed appropriately and timely, ensuring safe discharges with warm hand-offs to Primary Care and other referred VA/community programs.
Ensures all standard operating procedures and policies related to the work unit are updated at all times.
Ensures staff are educated and competent on all local, VISN, national and State policies/laws related necessary to carry out their work practices.
Develops, educates and monitors workload/productivity standards for assigned work unit.
Supports the MSW training program and ensures the work unit regularly and consistently has MSW interns.
Engages with other VISN 8 Acute Care Medicine/Surgery Supervisors at least monthly to share best practices and implement learned best practices for the betterment of the work unit.
Regularly engages in performance improvement activities related to the work unit or Social Work Service.
Participates in local, VISN and national meetings, community of practices, and other as related to the position.
Understands Joint Commission standards and ensures the work unit is Joint Commission ready at all times.
Supports Social Work Service and engages in work assignments, meetings and other duties as assigned by the Chief, Social Work Service and reports directly to a higher level supervisory social worker.
Work Schedule: Monday-Friday, 7:30am - 4:00pm. including Federal holiday covering shifts 7 days a week M-F from 7:30am to 6:00pm

Qualifications
Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met.
Basic Requirements:
United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
English Language Proficiency: Candidates must be proficient in spoken and written English to be appointed as authorized by 38 U.S.C. § 7403(f).
Education: Have a master's degree in social work from a school of social work fully accredited by the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE). Graduates of schools of social work that are in candidacy status do not meet this requirement until the School of Social Work is fully accredited. A doctoral degree in social work may NOT be substituted for the master's degree in social work. Verification of the degree can be made by going to http://www.cswe.org/Accreditation to verify that the social work degree meets the accreditation standards for a masters of social work.
Licensure: Persons hired or reassigned to social worker positions in the GS-0185 series in VHA must be licensed or certified by a state to independently practice social work at the master's degree level. Current state requirements may be found by going to http://vaww.va.gov/OHRM/T38Hybrid/.
Grade Determinations: In addition to meeting the basic requirements stated above, the following qualifications criteria must be met in determining the appropriate grade assignment of candidates.
GS-12 Supervisory Social Worker candidates must have the following:
Education and Experience: One (1) year of experience equivalent to the GS-11 grade level. Experience must demonstrate possession of advanced practice skills in a specialty area or in administration demonstrating progressively more professional competency and judgment. Candidate may have certification or other post-master's degree training from a nationally recognized professional organization or university that includes a defined curriculum/course of study and internship, or equivalent supervised professional experience.
Licensure/Certification: Individuals assigned as Supervisory Social Workers must be licensed or certified at the advanced practice level and must be able to provide supervision for licensure.

Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: In addition to the experience above, the candidate must demonstrate all of the following KSA's:
Ability to independently organize work, set priorities, and meet multiple deadlines.
Knowledge of supervisory duties which includes clinical supervision, consultation, negotiation with other departments and quality improvement.
Ability to ensure provision of clinical social work services.
Ability to provide staff training and development.
Skill in interpersonal relationships in dealing with employees, team leaders, and managers.
May qualify based on being covered by the Grandfathering Provision as described in the VA Qualification Standard for this occupation (only applicable to current VHA employees who are in this occupation and meet the criteria).
Preferred Experience: Prefer at least 3 years post licensure experience, preferably in a medical setting and specifically Acute Care Medicine/Surgery experience.

The full performance level of this vacancy is GS-12.
