The Watervliet Arsenal is an Army-owned and-operated manufacturing center located in New York. It is the oldest, continuously active arsenal in the United States having begun operations in 1813. Today it is relied upon by U.S. and foreign militaries to produce the most advanced, high-powered weaponry for cannon, howitzer, and mortar systems. The Arsenal is the only location in the DoD that has a weapons research facility (Benet Laboratories) collocated with a manufacturing facility (Arsenal).

Duties

Passes on to other workers instructions received from supervisor, and starts work in the Tubes Rough Machine Production. Checks work in progress and when finished, checks for compliance with supervisors instructions on work sequence, procedures, methods, and deadlines. Insures that needed plans, blueprints, material, and tools are available, and that needed stock is obtained from supply locations. Independently lays out reference points, lines to be followed in the machining process, planning and setting up the work in the machine, programming the cutter path, selecting/shaping metal cutting tools, inserts and operating various machine tools. Performs continuous path/multi-axis machining operations through Computer Numerically Controlled (CNC) programming using procedures such as multiple setups, debugging first run programs, and making changes to machine tool programs.

Frequently handles objects weighing up to 10 pounds, and occasionally handles objects weighing up to 50 pounds. WORKING CONDITIONS: Works in a well-lighted, heated, and ventilated shop with concrete floors. Exposed to dust from grinding, oil from machines, dirt, heat, noise, and fumes. Subject to the hazards of burns from hot metal chips, dust in the lungs, cuts, bruises, and injuries to the hands from the use of machine and hand tools, skin irritation from contact with coolants, lubricants, and abrasive compounds, and subject to strains from infrequent moving, lifting, and handling of heavy items. Wears safety glasses, shoes, and other safety apparel and equipment as required.
