Employment Type: Full-time
NIST works with industry and science to advance innovation and improve quality of life. We're looking for a Physicist to join our team!
This notice is issued under direct-hire authority to recruit new talent to occupations for which NIST has a severe shortage of candidates.
Duties
Work as part of a multi-disciplinary NIST team planning, managing, and conducting research to develop and apply advanced measurement techniques using frequency combs for optical spectroscopy, ranging, and other precision optical metrology applications.
Develop and advance approaches to optical spectroscopy and ranging to support applications of interest to the government and industry.
Work will include top level system design, design of electro-optic subsystems and optical hardware, development of novel measurement approaches, detailed noise analysis, laboratory-based testing and measurements, field demonstrations, and authoring peer-reviewed journal articles documenting key results.
Assist in the management of projects within the group, propose new research directions and applications for optical spectroscopy and ranging, and represent NIST's efforts in these areas to sponsors and the international scientific community.

Qualifications
Basic Requirements:
Degree: physics; or related degree that included at least 24 semester hours in physics.
Or
Combination of education and experience -- courses equivalent to a major in physics totaling at least 24 semester hours, plus appropriate experience or additional education.
In either A or B above, the courses must have included a fundamental course in general physics and, in addition, courses in any two of the following: electricity and magnetism, heat, light, mechanics, modern physics, and sound.
In addition to the above basic requirements, applicants must have one year (52 weeks) of specialized experience at the GS-12 level (ZP-III at NIST). Specialized experience is defined as: experience with design, laboratory operation, field operation, and signals analysis for dual-frequency-comb precision measurements such as optical ranging and precision molecular spectroscopy. Experience in precision optical measurements demonstrated by experience with optical frequency combs, laser ranging, optical device characterization, laser-based spectroscopy, optical instrument design. Demonstrated ability to develop and use scientific analysis tools program in either Igor, Matlab, and/or Python for complex optical metrology applications. Expertise in standard optical and rf laboratory test equipment and setups as demonstrated by successful use of systems as part of a precision optical metrology experiment.
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done. We will credit all qualifying volunteer experience in your application.
The qualification requirements in this vacancy announcement are based on the U.S. Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualification Standards Handbook.
