This position is located in the Information Technology Program (ITP) of the Division of Intramural Research (DIR), National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS), which provides IT infrastructure and desktop support and develops and deploys informatics solutions in support of intramural research initiatives including services, tools, web applications and data to intramural scientists; participates in the evaluation and prioritization of the DIR bioinformatics research portfolio.

Duties

As a Supervisory IT Specialist (SYSADMIN) you will: Serve as a technical advisor in evaluating, planning, developing, implementing, and supporting hosting infrastructure technologies, especially in the hosting of enterprise-class systems and storage area networks (SANs). Leads or participates in the investigation of new and improved server, storage, software, advanced file system and other hosting technologies and/or services and recommends adoption of developments that will enhance the effectiveness of the services being provided in meeting both current and future customer requirements. Responsible for configuring and managing the following major areas of system administration, file system configuration, advanced file systems management, security, multifactor authentication, storage area networks, or hardware architecture, configuration management. Serves as a technical specialist for the design of integrated, multi-site solutions that provide infrastructure across geographically diverse locations in a seamless configuration, and configurations which can support applications designed to take advantage of multiple locations. Designs, implements, tests, and installs modifications to server, workstation, and network application configurations to significantly enhance hosting services performance, functionality, security, and scalability. Sets goals and administratively and technically directs work of subordinates, plans, assigns, reviews, and accepts, amends, or rejects work done by subordinates. Assigns performance ratings, approves awards and takes performance-based corrective actions; makes work assignments, sets or negotiates deadlines and completion dates. Proposes, designs, implements, and tests modifications to security configurations designed to significantly enhance the secure functionality of applications hosting services. Keeps abreast of new and evolving technology in the hosting services area. Alerts management to relevant new technologies, tools, and methodologies and evaluates and recommends adoption of the most promising developments.

Qualifications

To qualify for a Supervisory IT Specialist (SYSADMIN) position at the GS 2210 14, you must have IT-related experience as described below. The experience may be demonstrated by paid or unpaid experience and/or completion of specific, intensive training (for example, IT certification), as appropriate. IT-related experience must demonstrate each of the four competencies listed below: Attention to Detail - Is thorough when performing work and conscientious about attending to detail. Customer Service - Works with clients and customers (that is, any individuals who use or receive the services or products that you work unit produces, including the general public, individuals who work in the agency, other agencies, or organizations outside the Government) to assess their needs, provide information or assistance, resolve their problems, or satisfy their expectations; knows about available products and services; is committed to providing quality products and services. Oral Communication - Expresses information (for example, ideas or facts) to individuals or groups effectively, taking into account the audience and nature of the information (for example, technical, sensitive, controversial); makes clear and convincing oral presentations; listens to others, attends to nonverbal cues, and responds appropriately. Problem Solving - Identifies problems; determines accuracy and relevance of information; uses sound judgment to generate and evaluate alternatives, and to make recommendations. AND to qualify at the GS-14 level: You must demonstrate in your resume at least one (1) year of qualifying specialized experience equivalent to the GS-13 level in the Federal Government performing the following types of tasks: planning, coordinating, developing and implementing the operation of information technology infrastructure and systems; providing expert technical consultation on the development of long-range IT strategic plans and a wide range of issues relating to data archive, database architecture, information systems, computer operations and computer networks; providing technical leadership in the selection, evaluation and system administration for local area networks and associated servers; leading a team of employees in the information technology field; and developing and evaluating existing, planned/new systems and service metrics to assess performance. You will receive credit for all experience material to the position, including experience gained in religious, civic, welfare, service, and organizational activities, regardless of whether you received pay.
