This is a Direct Hire Authority (DHA) solicitation utilizing the DHA for DIB-MRTFB to recruit for positions in the competitive service.
About the Position: To perform pharmacy technician duties and assist the pharmacist in the processing and dispensing of prescriptions, with the 96th MDG, Eglin AFB.
A recruitment or relocation incentive may be authorized.
Salary negotiation may be available for those candidates who are new to Federal service.
Advance leave accrual may be authorized.
Duties
Performs pharmacy dispensing services.
Receives and reviews individual prescriptions for the full range of pharmaceuticals, to include controlled drugs, to determine kind, strength, and dosage of drugs to be dispensed.
Interprets prescription orders for appropriateness and conformity with established standards.
Considers pharmacy policy limitations and instructions on the order.
Clarifies issues or problems concerning dosing, interactions, allergies, or instructions with the provider, pharmacist, or supervisor when required.
Answers routine inquiries from doctors, nurses, and other medical staff on the availability of specific items, e.g., drugs in stock, new drugs on order, and dosage forms available in the pharmacy.
Processes prescriptions by data entry and verifies prescription orders.
Selects, weighs, and measures components and computes required quantities.
Performs a variety of standard assays on completed products utilizing testing equipment such as specific gravity apparatus.
Receives and reviews orders received for intravenous additive solutions and checks with the pharmacist if incomplete orders or other discrepancies are noted.
Performs administrative and logistical functions.
Certifies that medications are stored in appropriate locations and under established security guidelines.
Provides training, assistance, and technical oversight as required.
Requirements
- Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
- This is a drug testing designated position. The incumbent is subject to random testing for drug use.
- May be required to work other than normal duty hours, which may include evenings, weekends, holidays.
- Position requires the ability to discern colors and contrast.
- Will be required to participate in the Tuberculosis (TB) program.
- May be subject to testing and/or immunization programs for HEP B/Rubella, as determined for health and safety of employees.
- Must possess and maintain current certification in Basic Life Support (BLS).
- National Pharmacy Technician Certification is highly desired.
- A pre-placement medical examination is required.
- Position requires the ability to discern colors and contrast.
- Moderate to heavy lifting up to 40 pounds is required.
- Selectees will be required to sign a statement (Condition of Employment) consenting to seasonal influenza vaccinations or must provide a recognized exemption.

In order to qualify, you must meet the experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. For positions at GS-4 and above: Qualifying specialized experience may have been gained in hospital pharmacies, retail pharmacies, or in pharmaceutical firms or laboratories. Experience must have provided a basic knowledge of:
Pharmaceutical nomenclature;
Characteristics, strengths, and dosage forms of pharmaceuticals;
Pharmaceutical systems of weights and measures; and the
Variety of procedures and techniques involved in the care, storage, repackaging, bulk compounding, and distribution of pharmaceuticals.
Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes: verifying accuracy of pharmaceutical labels; filling prescriptions; distributing pharmaceuticals; and/or utilizing pharmacy-based computer systems gained in hospital pharmacies, retail pharmacies, or pharmaceutical firms or laboratories to issue prescriptions. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-05).
Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. For this job, you must meet the qualification requirement using experience alone--no substitution of education for experience is permitted.
