You will serve as a INTERDISCIPLINARY PHYSICAL SCIENTIST/ GEOPHYSICIST / OCEANOGRAPHER in the HYDROGRAPHIC MISSION READINESS BRANCH, SURVEY SUPPORT DIVISION, HYDROGRAPHIC DEPARTMENT of NAVOCEANO BAY ST LOUIS.

Duties

You will oversee and coordinate the examination at-sea and incoming field survey data requiring processing and determine processing parameters to be employed. You will test and improve data collection processes and procedures for the computation and analysis of multidisciplinary data processes on the Department Information Technology (IT) Systems. You will refine, test, and evaluate improved methods for the processing of hydrographic, bathymetric, oceanographic, and geophysical data. You will provide expertise in multidisciplinary surveys and ensure accuracy and quality of collected data.

  • This is a bargaining unit position.
  • You will be required to obtain and maintain an interim and/or final security clearance prior to entrance on duty. Failure to obtain and maintain the required level of clearance may result in the withdrawal of a job offer or removal.
  • This position may require travel from normal duty station to CONUS and OCONUS and may include remote or isolated sites. You must be able to travel on military and commercial aircraft for extended periods of time.

Qualifications

In addition to the Basic Requirements for this position, your resume must also demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-11 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. Specialized experience must demonstrate the following: Subject Matter Expert (SME) applying theories, principles and techniques of physics, geology, geodesy, oceanography, bathymetry and hydrography for the collection and processing of bathymetric and hydrographic data; utilizing Geographic Information System (GIS) technology performing geophysical data processing; test systems modifications, initiate standard operating procedures and provide documentation to surveyors and data processors and evaluate and validate hydrographic, bathymetric, oceanographic and geophysical data and preparing significant publishable scientific reports. PHYSICAL SCIENTIST 1301
Degree: physical science, engineering, or mathematics that included 24 semester hours in physical science and/or related engineering science such as mechanics, dynamics, properties of materials, and electronics.
or

Combination of education and experience -- education equivalent to one of the majors shown in A above that included at least 24 semester hours in physical science and/or related engineering science, plus appropriate experience or additional education.

GEOPHYSICIST 1313

Degree: that included at least 30 semester hours in mathematics (including calculus) and the physical sciences (geophysics, physics, engineering, geology, astronomy, meteorology, electronics, etc.).

or

Combination of education and experience -- courses as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.

OCEANOGRAPHER 1360

Degree: major study of at least 24 semester hours in oceanography or a related discipline such as physics, meteorology, geophysics, mathematics, chemistry, engineering, geology, or biology, plus 20 additional semester hours in any combination of oceanography, physics, geophysics, chemistry, mathematics, meteorology, computer science, and engineering sciences.

or

Combination of education and experience -- course work as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.

Applicants who qualify on the basis of major study in biology or geology must have had at least 6 semester hours in the major directly concerned with marine science or 6 semester hours in oceanography; applicants who qualify on the basis of other physical sciences or engineering must have had differential and integral calculus and at least 6 semester hours in physics.
