Salary: $32 - 38 per hour

You will serve as a FOUNDRY WORK INSPECTOR in the Quality Assurance Division, Naval Foundry and Propeller Center (NFPC) of NORFOLK NAVAL SHIPYARD.

Duties

You will inspect molding work for surface ship and submarine components and systems using highly sophisticated techniques. You will determine and assemble pertinent information and materials necessary to effectively accomplish planning, scheduling, inspection and reporting required in the performance of duties. You will exercise initiative and judgement in performing proper follow-up to assure timely corrective action. You will interpret technical specifications, directives, and Navy publications, and clearly identify discrepancies and deficiencies. You will assist in training recruited inspectors.

  • You will be required to wear personal protective equipment such as helmets, gloves, coveralls, glasses, goggles, respirators and safety shoes continuously for the duration of the work shift.
  • Work is performed in areas where potentially harmful physical and chemical agents are present (e.g. fumes, dust, heat, ionizing and non-ionizing radiation and chemicals). You will be required to participate in medical surveillance programs.
  • This position may require travel from normal duty station to CONUS and OCONUS and may include remote or isolated sites. You must be able to travel on military and commercial aircraft for extended periods of time.

Qualifications

The Screen-out Element for this position is: ABILITY TO INSPECT such as: Determining manufacture of molds, sand/cement grades, layout/location of mold components, gating, sprues, risers, shrinkage, porosity, sizing, and practical of various alloys and casting conditions. Reading and interpreting complicated written technical material such as Propeller Center Instructions (PCIs), Engineering Service Requests (ESRs), job orders, specifications, procedures, sketches, drawings, and blueprints. Performing inspections in other ship system areas, inspecting structural or mechanical systems when required. Making decisions or acceptance or rejection on complex systems or equipment. Making on-the-spot decisions and early determination of nonconforming or problem areas. Using mechanical, electrical, and electric gauging and measuring instruments. Being able to communicate clearly to the supervisor, work leader, and the engineering and production departments, both orally and in writing. Determining overall inspection needs, quality checkpoints, and preparing procedures or check lists for quality control. Providing inspection information in the appropriate format. Maintaining files, charts and status reports on progress inspections/documents completed, Assembling and auditing certification documents for submission to official records via immediate supervisor. Assisting in formulating inspection procedures and check-off lists.
