As a Government Information Specialist, you will be part of the Office of Legal Counsel, Equal Employment Opportunity Commission. The incumbent performs various Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) duties, including processing and making recommended determinations on FOIA requests for headquarters agency records and information and performing day-to-day liaison oversight functions for field FOIA components.

Duties

As a Government Information Specialist you will perform the following duties: Research, analyze and evaluate data and determine whether disclosure of information is legally permissible under FOIA statute and EEOC disclosure policies. Review and process FOIA request for agency records and information. Redact, obscure and/or withhold confidential or privilege information on documents. Prepare FOIA determination letters. Process request for disclosure Section 83 requests.

  • Suitable for Federal employment, determined by a background investigation
  • May be required to successfully complete a probationary period

Qualifications

For the GS-9: A. You must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-7 grade level in the Federal service. Specialized experience includes work that required researching, analyzing, evaluating data, and responding to a variety of Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) and Privacy Act requests. OR B.have a Master's or equivalent graduate degree or 2 full years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to such a degree in any field of study or LL. B or J.D., if related from an accredited college and/or university. One year of full-time graduate education is considered to be the number of credit hours that the school attended has determined to represent 1 year of full-time study. If that information cannot be obtained from the school, 18 semester hours or 27 quarter hours will satisfy the one year of full-time study requirement. OR Have a combination of experience as described in "A" above and education as described in "B" above. GS-11: A.You must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-9 grade level in the Federal service. Specialized experience includes assisting with the management of Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) and Privacy Act requests; providing Assistance in gathering, identifying, and/or analyzing information And assisting in the development of program procedures to improve efficiency. OR B. Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree; or 3 full years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to such a degree or LL.M. OR have a combination of experience as described in "A" above and education as described in "B" above. Merit promotion applicants must meet time-in-grade requirement as defined in 5 CFR 300, Subpart F. One year at the GS-7 level is required to meet the time-in-grade requirements for the GS- 9 level. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
