Duties

If selected for this position, you will join a well-respected team that is responsible for supporting Assistant United States Attorneys in the Appellate Division of the U.S. Attorney's Office for the District of Columbia. Typical work assignments will include: Assembling record material for court filings; Organizing, processing, and copying documents in accordance with requirements; Examining, preparing, and processing a variety of technical legal documents; Maintaining automated case-tracking data base and enters/retrieves data or pertinent information; Managing paper and electronic documents, correspondence, briefs, and other documentary materials; Performing docketing duties such as opening, updating and closing cases through use of the automated case tracking system. As necessary, searches databases for required information; Performing administrative functions such as copying, binding and preparing record materials for court filings. Routinely goes to local courts (Superior and District) for document research and retrieval; Receiving visitors and callers, establishing a variety of files, maintaining calendars; Performing other legal administrative duties as assigned. Responsibilities will increase and assignments will become more complex as your training and experience progress.

Requirements

  • You must be a U.S. Citizen or National
  • Initial appointment is conditioned upon a satisfactory pre-employment adjudication. This includes fingerprint, credit and tax checks, and drug testing. Continued employment is subject to a favorable adjudication of a background investigation
  • You must be registered for Selective Service, if applicable
  • If selected, you may be required to complete a one year probationary period.
  • You must meet all qualification requirements upon the closing date of this announcement.

Qualifications

QUALIFICATIONS: To be found qualified for this position, you must have at least one full year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the next lower grade in Federal service (GS-6 level experience). Specialized experience for this position includes performing the following duties in a legal setting: preparing a full range of legal documents; maintaining electronic and hard copy case files; inputting information into case management software; providing routine litigation support assistance such as scanning; electronic filing; and assisting with trial preparation (compiling trial notebooks witness and exhibit lists); receiving callers and visitors with inquiries and providing assistance. To be qualified, you must type at least 40 words per minute based on a 5 minute sample with three or fewer errors. (A typing test may later be required.) Education is generally not applicable at the GS-7 level. As a general rule, education is not creditable above GS-5 for most positions covered by this standard; however, graduate education may be credited in those few instances where the graduate education is directly related to the work of the position. Interagency Career Transition Assistance Plan (ICTAP)- The ICTAP provides eligible displaced Federal competitive service employees with selection priority over other candidates for competitive service vacancies.
