The position fills a supporting role that requires the incumbent to be involved in a variety of duties essential to program implementation and delivery of high-quality care to the Veteran. Incumbent provides transcription support for staff pathologists in the clinical and anatomical pathology areas of P&LMS, as well as tracking surgical and cytological slides and reports that are transferred between P&LMS and other medical and research facilities.
Duties
Major Duties as Assigned, but not limited to:
Typing/Word Processing
Performs, prints typing work using word processing software and equipment. Edits for clarity without altering the meaning of the raw, dictated material. Work is performed at or above the minimum proficiency level.
Uses specialized terminology from the fields of medicine and science as found in special reference materials such as medical terminology dictionaries and Inter or Intranet web sites, technical manuals, or comparable items.
Integrates software to generate specific working documents, templates, and/or databases.
Operates voice dictation system to listen to recorded information to be transcribed.
Verifies patient information for accuracy by comparing the identification information on the recording with that on any hard copy documents as well as what is in the electronic health record.
Correspondence Preparation
Prepares, composes and/or reviews correspondence prepared for the purpose of obtaining or supplying information pertaining to surgical and/or cytology procedures.
Replies to correspondence are clear statements of facts using model letters or templates, standard paragraphs, forms, certificates, worksheets, or similar material in which factual information is provided by qualified individuals.
Replies to vague, incomplete, or confused inquiries by independently recognizing issues, topics, or problems. Inquiries are usually presented by members of the public who are often unsure what information they are looking for or do not know how to identify it by title or topic.
Finds alternative sources of information on which to base a reply when correspondence has provided incomplete or inaccurate information.
Administrative
Arranges pathology records for storage/reference, scheduled disposition, and retrieval.
Performs general filing, using alphabetical, numerical, or chronological filing systems to file reports, correspondence, records, publications, regulations, directives, and similar material. Files are assigned a subject, alpha, decimal or alphanumeric classification.
Determines file retention and disposal requirements using applicable authorities such as per VA policy and accrediting agency requirements, screening, and preparation of or changing established file procedures.
Receives and directs callers and visitors. Provides information about the organization, its functions, activities and personnel.
Provides general telephone and visitor referral services. Directs visitors and refers callers to appropriate staff member based on specific request or by ascertaining the nature of the call.
Other related work as assigned.
Work Schedule: Monday thru Friday, 7:30am - 4:00pm

Qualifications

You may qualify based on your experience and/or education as described below:
Specialized Experience: You must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade GS-04 in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Examples of specialized experience would typically include, but are not limited to: Performs typing, office automation and data transcription work from voice recordings or written material in an accurate, efficient, and timely manner; Prepares gross and microscopic components of patient reports for Anatomic Pathology; Uses specific terminology in preparation of patient reports; Utilizes basic software and printing functions; Performs general filing using alphabetical, numerical and/or chronological methods. OR,
Education: Applicants may substitute education for the required experience. To qualify based on education for this grade level you must have four (4) years above high school education. (TRANSCRIPT REQUIRED) OR,
Combination: Applicants may also combine education and experience to qualify at this level. Equivalent combinations of successfully completed post-high school education and experience may be used to meet total experience requirements at grades GS-5 and below. You must have an combination of specialized experience and education in excess of the first 60 semester hours (i.e., beyond the second year) is creditable toward meeting the specialized experience requirement. One full academic year of study (30 semester hours) beyond the second year is equivalent to 6 months of specialized experience. (TRANSCRIPT REQUIRED)
In addition to meeting experience or education requirements, applicants for these positions must show possession of the following skills, as appropriate. Applicants may meet these requirements by passing the appropriate performance test, presenting a certificate of proficiency from a school or other organization authorized to issue such certificates by the Office of Personnel Management local office, or by self-certifying their proficiency.

Physical Requirements: The work is sedentary. Some work may require movement between offices, hospitals, warehouses, and similar areas for meetings and to conduct work. Work may also require walking/standing, in conjunctions with travel to and attendance at meetings and/or conferences away from the work site. Incumbent may carry and lift light items weighing less than 15 pounds.
