You will serve as an ENGINEERING TECHNICIAN (ELECTRICAL) in the Maintenance and Waterfront Engineering Branch (Code 711), Lifting and Handling Technical Division (Code 710), Deputy Lifting and Handling Department (Code 701), Lifting and Handling Department (Code700)
of NORFOLK NAVAL SHIPYARD.
Duties
You will be assigned to the most complex electrical engineering technician projects on Weight Handling Equipment which includes various dock cranes, bridge cranes and associated supporting systems and circuits.
You will direct troubleshooting on crane electrical systems, control circuits, programmable logic controllers and adjustable speed drive, including utilization of lap top computers.
You will prepare technical electrical/electronic data requiring broad engineering technician experience for use in the preparation of projects.
You will make field investigations to determine the scope of a reported electrical malfunction and make design or procedural changes to correct the deficiency.
You will define project scope and prepare engineering cost estimates for various electrical/electronic projects for the purpose of securing project approval and funding.
You will review and check contractor shop drawings for conformance with contract plans and specifications and for conformance with intended design functions.
You will review and recommend approval of electrical/electronic engineering designs prepared by architects and engineering firms under contract to the Government.
You will review trend analysis data on non-nuclear weight lifting equipment and nuclear/non-nuclear weight handling equipment to recommend design, computer program or process changes and modifications.
You will prepare Crane Engineering Instructions for work to accomplish modification/alterations -or repair.
You will make necessary calculations and prepare drawings for projects to be accomplished by shipyard labor or by competitively bid construction and/or equipment procurement contracts.

- You will be required to wear protective clothing such as coveralls, gloves, hard-toed footwear, hard hat, safety glasses and safety belt during field inspections.
- This position may require travel from normal duty station to CONUS and OCONUS and may include remote or isolated sites. You must be able to travel on military and commercial aircraft for extended periods of time.
Qualifications
Your resume must demonstrate at least one year of Specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-11 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. Specialized experience must demonstrate the following:
Experience troubleshooting crane electrical systems, control circuits, programmable logic controllers and adjustable speed drive, diesel generator and motor generator.
Experience in programming computer controlled drive and monitoring systems required for monitoring ladder logic1 variables and adjusting tunable variables, to support troubleshooting and enhance crane drive operation.
Experience in a variety of technical work concerning electrical and electronic designs of a complex nature with working drawings/schematics.
Experience in resolving design, procedural and process problems to develop as needed new approaches or methods.
