The primary purpose of this position is to serve as a Firefighter assigned to a crew engaged in airfield, structural firefighting, crash-rescue, and Hazardous Materials (HAZMAT) Technician, to drive and operate firefighting vehicles of significant complexity, and to respond to the presence or potential releases of hazardous materials for the purpose of stopping or controlling the release.
Duties
Predict the potential harm to people and the environment. Develop an appropriate strategy for approaching the release site and containing the release.
Collaborate on post incident debriefings and critiques. Prepare incident reports and documentation.
Operate pumps, foam generators, boom and ground sweep nozzles, and other similar equipment. Determine proper pressures, the number of lines, and relays requirements to the booster pumper.
Perform crash-rescue and firefighting duties involving air traffic or support operations where hazardous conditions are such that the expectancy for fire is high and potential for becoming destructive is great.
As a crew member, participate in controlling and extinguishing fires by operating hoses, ladders, and hydrants. Participate in regular training and exercises as required.

- Must possess or be able to obtain and maintain a secret clearance
- Employee must participate in a mandatory physical fitness program
- This posn is subject to provisions of the DoD Priority Placement Program
- The employee is required to work a 72 hour week on a 24 hour on/24 hour off basis which includes weekends and holidays. May be subject to recall
- This position requires the employee to work under adverse environmental conditions and falls under the respiratory protection program and hearing conservation program
- The work requires the employee to drive a motor vehicle. An appropriate, valid driver’s license is required
- Disclosure of Political Appointments
- Employee is required to use all safety equipment and clothing provided by management
- This is a Testing Designated Position. The employee is subject to random drug testing (IAW HQ-USAF letter dated 29 Jan 90)
- Employee may be required to work the Fire Alarm and Communications Center (FACC)
- Employee must obtain and maintain Emergency Medical Responder (EMR) and CPR/AED certifications as condition of employment
- Employee must obtain and maintain NWCG Wildland Red Card requirements to include annual work capacity test as a condition of employment
Qualifications
In order to qualify, you must meet the specialized experience requirements described in the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualification Standards for General Schedule Positions, Individual Occupational Requirements for GS-0081 series.
SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: Applicants must have at least one year of specialized experience at the next lower grade GS-06 level in federal service which equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSA's) to perform successfully the duties of the position and that is typically in or related to the position of Firefighter. Specialized experience is experience which may have been gained while controlling or extinguishing fires as a member of an organized military, industrial, volunteer, or governmental fire department or brigade; performing rescue operations; performing detection, reduction, or elimination of potential fire hazards; operating of fire communications equipment; controlling hazardous materials incidents and/or developing, implementing, or providing training in fire protection and prevention.
In additional to the qualification requirements above, applicant must possess the following valid nationally recognized firefighter certifications before entrance on duty:
Airport Firefighter (includes Firefighter I, II)
HAZMAT Awareness
HAZMAT Operations
HAZMAT Technician
Apparatus Driver Operator - Pumper
Apparatus Driver Operator - Aircraft Rescue and Firefighting (ARFF) and
Apparatus Driver Operator- Aerial, Apparatus Driver Operator- Mobile Water Supply (MWS) (Required if Aerial and/or MWS is assigned).

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (KSAs): Your qualifications will be evaluated on the basis of your level of knowledge, skills, abilities and/or competencies in the following areas:
Knowledge to drive and operate firefighting vehicles of significant complexity, and the principles of hydraulics as they pertain to waterflow, water pressure, water levels, line (friction) losses, etc.
Knowledge of basic and specialized airfield and structural firefighting equipment (fire alarm system operation, fire extinguishing equipment operation, etc.), techniques, and procedures; and of basic and specialized building design, construction, and occupancy.
Knowledge of hazardous materials emergency response procedures, equipment, identification, and mitigation actions.
Knowledge of emergency first aid techniques; and of safety requirements as outlined in applicable safety standards, regulations, and/or technical orders.
Skill in operating communications equipment.
Ability to communicate both orally and in writing.
PART-TIME OR UNPAID EXPERIENCE: Credit will be given for appropriate unpaid and or part-time work. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week.
VOLUNTEER WORK EXPERIENCE: Refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service Programs (i.e., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student and social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge and skills that can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
