This position is located in the Prosthetic and Sensory Aids Service (PSAS) at the VA North Texas Health Care System (VANTHCS) in Dallas, TX. The Prosthetics Clerk performs a variety of clerical duties in support of the Prosthetic and Sensory Aids Section determining eligibility, preparing requisitions and purchasing items.

Duties

***THIS IS NOT A VIRTUAL POSITION, YOU MUST LIVE WITHIN OR BE WILLING TO RELOCATE WITHIN A COMMUTABLE DISTANCE OF THE DUTY LOCATION*** Major duties include but are not limited to: Receives patients at the front desk and determines what is needed; Renders decisions on client eligibility for prosthetic devices and reviews request from physician; Issues items from Prosthetic Stock and posts to the patient's Prosthetic Record; Counsels patients and provides instructions in the use of prosthetic devices; Schedules appointments for patients requiring services from the Prosthetic/Orthotic lab; Receives and sorts incoming mail; Answers phone calls and assists the Inventory Manager with mail-outs as needed; Reviews consults for eligibility and takes action as needed which includes forwarding consults to other clinics as appropriate; Purchases minor items and assists with the Prosthetics Service Card (PSC) program to repair braces, wheelchairs and prosthetic limbs up to the micro purchase threshold; Reviews and checks in packages in the prosthetic area and warehouse when requested and makes the appropriate notes in the computer system; and Performs other related duties as assigned. Work Schedule: Monday through Friday, 7:30am to 4:00pm; 8:00am to 4:30pm Recruitment & Relocation Incentives: Not authorized Financial Disclosure Report: Not Required

Qualifications

To qualify for this position at the GS-5 level, you must meet one of the following: Experience: You must have at least one (1) full year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level (GS-4) in the Federal Service that has given you the particular knowledge, skills and abilities required to successfully perform the duties of a Prosthetics Clerk, and that is typically in or related to the position to be filled. Specialized experience includes utilizing various computer programs including Microsoft applications to interpret and input data; performing word processing/typing tasks; answering phone calls and assisting with inquires; screening and directing patients to the appropriate staff member; ordering supplies and maintaining records; and providing excellent customer service to internal and external customers. NOTE: Experience must be fully documented on your resume and must include job title, duties, month and year start/end dates AND hours worked per week. ~OR~ Education: Successfully completed four (4) years of education above the high school level in any field for which high school graduation or the equivalent is the normal prerequisite. This education must have been obtained in an accredited business, secretarial or technical school, junior college, college or university. One year of full-time academic study is defined as 30 semester hours, 45 quarter hours, or the equivalent in a college or university, or at least 20 hours of classroom instruction per week for approximately 36 weeks in a business, secretarial, or technical school. Education cannot be credited without documentation. ~OR~ Combination: Equivalent combinations of successfully completed post-high school education (beyond the second year) and specialized experience, as described above, which meet the total experience requirements for this grade level. This education must have been obtained in an accredited business, secretarial or technical school, junior college, college or university. You will be rated on the following Competencies as part of the assessment questionnaire for this position: CommunicationsComputer SkillsCustomer Service (Clerical/Technical)Team Building IMPORTANT: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. All experience listed on your resume must include the month and year start/end dates. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Physical Requirements: The work is mostly sedentary, requiring some walking, climbing and carrying of light to medium-heavy stock items of up to 50 pounds. The person in this position may potentially, although infrequently if at all, handle equipment returned from patients with contagious diseases. The person in this position works in a hospital office with the possibility of coming into contact with ill or diseased patients. Face-to-face interaction with other hospital departments may require the person in this position to walk long distances to other offices. The person in this position must practice universal precautions. The person in this position administratively supports the VA Orthotics/Prosthetics Laboratory and is exposed to the additional hazards found therein.
