Duties

If selected for this position, the incumbent will serve as a subject matter expert on litigation support issues for both civil and criminal litigation teams with the U.S. Attorney's Office, for the District of Columbia (USAO-DC) Office of eLitigation. Typical work assignments will include: Litigation Support: Performing a variety of litigation support tasks necessary to process complex and/or voluminous electronically stored information (e.g., PDF files and portfolios, Word documents, Excel spreadsheets, email files such as .pst or .msg, non-standard or propriety files, audio and video files, etc.) and preparing it for review or production by the litigation team. Evaluation and Processing: Evaluating incoming electronic case materials to determine if they are in a useable format. Organizing and preparing electronic files for processing. Using specialized software applications to perform processing of complex and/or voluminous electronic files. Performing quality control on processed files; diagnoses and resolves identified errors, including by performing any necessary research. Consultation: Consulting with litigation team members (e.g., attorneys, investigators, legal support staff) to understand case needs and technical requirements. Review Databases: Using basic and complex document review database functions such as coding, tagging, advanced searching, sorting, filtering, and analytics (e.g., threading, stemming), and advises litigation teams on these functions' use. eLitigation: Supporting the USAO-DC's e-Litigation program, including by providing technical and strategic advice to office management on litigation technology applications and e-Litigation best practices. Project Management: Ensuring litigation support projects are completed according to litigation team requirements and industry standards, and that specifications and deadlines are met. Tracks the status of projects and adjusts project steps as necessary to ensure deadlines and specifications are met. Responsibilities will increase and assignments will become more complex as your training and experience progress.

Requirements

  • You must be a U.S. Citizen or National.
  • Initial appointment is conditioned upon a satisfactory pre-employment adjudication. This includes fingerprint, credit and tax checks, and drug testing. Continued employment is subject to a favorable adjudication of a background investigation.

Qualifications

QUALIFICATIONS: To be eligible at the GS-12 level, you must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-11 grade level in the Federal service as defined below. Specialized experience is defined as experience that has equipped you with the competencies needed to perform the job duties. Examples of specialized experience involves performing the following types of duties: performing litigation support tasks necessary to process complex/voluminous electronically stored information (e.g., PDF files and portfolios, Word documents, Excel spreadsheets, email files such as .pst or .msg, non-standard or proprietary files, audio and video files, etc.) and preparing it for review or production by the litigation team; knowledge of litigation process, legal terminology, and court rules and procedures (e.g., rules of evidence and rules of civil and criminal procedure), and ability to apply that knowledge when analyzing project requirements, identifying appropriate technical solutions and litigation support approaches, and developing timelines for projects; providing advice and guidance on a wide range of complex litigation support issues; representing the office in interactions with outside organizations; providing customer support services for litigation team members on use of litigation technology applications (e.g., document review databases, courtroom presentation software, etc.), including basic troubleshooting and training; managing multiple litigation support projects (e.g., processing electronic files, generating electronic discovery productions); identifying and resolving technical issues relating to litigation support tasks, including the ability to troubleshoot and conduct appropriate research; communicating, orally and in writing, with litigation team members (e.g., attorneys, legal support staff, investigators), to explain technical concepts, the ability to provide information about the status of litigation support projects, and the ability to interpret a variety of instructions provided in written or oral format.
