Job opening: SECURITY SPECIALIST

Salary: $78 592 - 122 459 per year

You will serve as a SECURITY SPECIALIST in the OFFICE OF THE JUDGE ADVOCATE GENERAL of NLSC.

Duties

You will provide personnel security policy, procedures, systems, and guidance including reviewing requests for clearances, interviewing nominees, and applying security regulations regarding the type of security check needed. You will ensure that information is classified under the appropriate authority and in protection from unauthorized disclosure. You will establish objectives and rate performance, and approve or reject all personnel actions. You will provide on-site presentations to field activities and other staff regarding security program awareness and training topics. You will provide technical guidance for physical security processes such space accreditation and de-accreditation and the modification and review of all alarmed open storage areas.

Requirements

  • Generally, current federal employees applying for GS jobs must serve at least one year at the next lower grade level. This requirement is called time-in-grade. Time-in-grade requirements must be met by the closing date of this announcement.
  • Within the Department of Defense (DoD), the appointment of retired military members within 180 days immediately following retirement date to a civilian position is subject to the provisions of 5 United States Code 3326.
  • Males born after 12-31-59 must be registered for Selective Service.
  • You will be required to obtain and maintain an interim and/or final security clearance prior to entrance on duty. Failure to obtain and maintain the required level of clearance may result in the withdrawal of a job offer or removal.
  • Successful completion of a pre-employment drug test (including marijuana) is required. A tentative offer of employment will be rescinded if you fail to report to the drug test appointment or fail the test. You will be subject to random testing.
  • This position is considered Key/Emergency-Essential. You will be required to provide immediate and continuing support to ensure the success of combat operations or the availability of combat-essential systems.

Qualifications

GS-12 Grade Level: Your resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-11 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. Specialized experience must demonstrate performing duties such as the following: 1) Developing staff studies and preparing special reports or presentations to advise command and senior management officials of the status of security programs relative to national security; 2) Evaluating the sensitivity determination for each position and determining national security information access requirements; 3) Drafting and evaluating reports of investigations and personnel files to determine whether to grant or restrict security clearances; and 4) Developing and implementing a security awareness program to ensure security processes, procedures, and control systems are in place and adhered to. GS-11 Grade Level: Your resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-09 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. Specialized experience must demonstrate performing duties such as the following: 1) Reviewing requests for clearances, applying security regulations regarding the type of security check needed; 2) Ensuring facilities, systems, and equipment operated or maintained for communication of classified information meet the objectives of federal policy; 3) Utilizing job-relevant information systems and/or software to research issues and provide pertinent information on varied topics affecting national security; and 4) Communicating a security awareness program to ensure continuous exposure to security concepts and policies. Education Substitution for Experience at the GS-11 Level:
In lieu of specialized experience, you may qualify with the following education or combination of both education and experience:

Successful completion of a Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree
OR
Successful completion of three full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree
OR
