Duties

If selected for this position, you will join the well-respected team of extremely dedicated and collaborative Assistant United States Attorneys (AUSAs), paralegals, legal assistants, and advocates who are committed to seeking justice for child and adult victims of domestic violence and sexual assaults that occurred in the District of Columbia. You will serve in a quasi-management position assisting the Supervisory Paralegal Specialist with overseeing the day-to-day administrative operations of the SODV section. This responsibility also includes assisting AUSAs in the preparation of investigation and cases involving misdemeanor and felony rape, child physical and sexual abuse, armed assaults, robberies, assaults with the intent to kill, stalking, voyeurism, unlawful distribution of sexually explicit images, local human trafficking, and other serious crimes. Typical responsibilities will include: -Articulates and communicates problems to be solved, and program issues under review, and deadlines and timeframes for completing the assigned work. -Supports the management of staff in carrying out day-to-day activities and works closely with the Supervisory Paralegal Specialist, Section Chief and Deputy Chief(s) in explaining the goals and objectives of the SCD. -Monitors and reports the status of work and the progress of pending cases and initiates action to ensure that the legal pleadings, forms, reports, correspondence, and other documents are prepared and submitted within established deadlines. -Assists in oversight and training of support employees, volunteer law clerks, and interns. -Coaches the staff in the selection and application of problem-solving methods and techniques, provides advice on work methods, practices, and procedures, and assists the team and/or individual in identifying the parameters of a viable solution. Responsibilities will increase and assignments will become more complex as your training and experience progress.

Requirements

  • You must be a U.S. Citizen or National.
  • Initial appointment is conditioned upon a satisfactory pre-employment adjudication. This includes fingerprint, credit and tax checks, and drug testing. Continued employment is subject to a favorable adjudication of a background investigation.
  • You must be registered for Selective Service, if applicable.
  • If selected, you may be required to complete a one year probationary period.
  • If selected, you will be subject to the satisfactory completion of a one year supervisory or managerial probationary period unless this requirement has been met previously.
  • Time-in-Grade: Federal employees must meet time-in-grade requirements within 30 days after the closing date of this announcement.
  • You must meet all qualification requirements within 30 days after the closing date of this announcement and before placement in the position.

Qualifications

To be found qualified at the GS-12 level, you must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-11 level in the Federal service. Specialized experience is defined as: Utilizing legal terminology; performing tasks necessary in the litigation process, court rules and procedures; performing legal research in support of case development; performing criminal litigation case management and preparing for court presentation, which includes organizing exhibits; preparing a variety of substantive legal documents and briefs; locating, logging, indexing, filing and retrieving materials in order to develop an effective system for purposes of discovery and exhibit lists; assembling information for reports or responses to inquiries, to compose correspondence requiring a legal or technical knowledge, and to anticipate and prepare materials needed to respond to correspondence or telephone calls; using automation support hardware and software to automate various legal and office support functions and to perform data retrieval from various legal and administrative subject-matter databases; coordinating the efforts of the team to deliver improved quality, quantity and timely services and work products to customers; articulating and communicating effectively with members of the Section related to program issues under review, deadlines, and time-frame for completing the assigned work.
