Duties

Work as part of a multi-disciplinary NIST team planning, managing, and conducting research to develop and apply advanced measurement techniques using frequency combs for optical time transfer and ranging. Develop and advance approaches to optical time transfer and ranging techniques to use for future optically based worldwide time dissemination, tests of fundamental physics, distributed coherent sensing, operation of quantum networks and yet-undiscovered applications. optical hardware design, development of novel signal processing algorithms, detailed noise analysis, laboratory-based measurements and field demonstrations, data analysis of large (>100 GB) datasets. Authoring peer-reviewed journal articles documenting key results. Assist in the management of the time transfer project, propose new research directions for the optical time transfer and ranging, and represent the time transfer project to sponsors and the international scientific community.

Qualifications

Basic Requirements: Degree: physics; or related degree that included at least 24 semester hours in physics. Or Combination of education and experience -- courses equivalent to a major in physics totaling at least 24 semester hours, plus appropriate experience or additional education. In either A or B above, the courses must have included a fundamental course in general physics and, in addition, courses in any two of the following: electricity and magnetism, heat, light, mechanics, modern physics, and sound. In addition to the above basic requirements, applicants must have one year (52 weeks) of specialized experience at the GS-12 level (ZP-III at NIST). Specialized experience is defined as experience with design, data acquisition, and signals analysis for dual-frequency-comb precision measurements such as optical time transfer, optical ranging, and precision molecular spectroscopy. Experience in precision optical measurements as exemplified by experience with optical frequency combs, laser ranging, optical device characterization, laser-based spectroscopy, optical instrument design. Ability to program in Igor, Matlab, and Python demonstrated by development of scientific analysis tools for complex optical metrology. Familiarity with FPGA-based and microcontroller-based data acquisition systems as exemplified by successful use of such as system as part of a precision optical metrology experiment.
