Duties
If selected for this position, you will join a well-respected team in the Early Case Assessment Section (ECAS), Superior Court Division of the United States Attorney's for the District of Columbia (USAO-DC) which is responsible for intake and screening of arrestees to be presented in D. C. Superior Court for arraignment, by providing comprehensive legal and administrative support.
Typical work assignments and responsibilities will include:
- Ensures an even flow and distribution of work, while handling priority work to meet court deadlines during the coverage of arraignment functions Monday through Saturday (including holidays) on a rotational basis starting as early as 6:00 am.
- Gives briefings on Intake/Papering/arraignment procedural matters.
- Directs the intake/papering process.
- Communicates directly with the Court regarding arraignment cases.
- Oversees criminal history checks and background investigations.
- Coordinates fugitive matters with law enforcement agencies in other jurisdictions.
- Manages and delegates employee work assignments, milestones, and deadlines to include support operations for trial preparation and other legal support activities.
- Provides technical advice, guidance, and training to legal support staff.
- Performs legal research and provides a variety of legal assistance and technical work requiring a specialized knowledge of the Intake/Papering/arraignment processes, procedures, and practices to support legal activities.
Responsibilities will increase and assignments will become more complex as your training and experience progress.
Requirements
- You must be a U.S. Citizen or National.
- Initial appointment is conditioned upon a satisfactory pre-employment adjudication. This includes fingerprint, credit and tax checks, and drug testing. Continued employment is subject to a favorable adjudication of a background investigation.
- You must be registered for Selective Service, if applicable.
- If selected, you may be required to complete a one year probationary period.
- If selected, you will be subject to the satisfactory completion of a one year supervisory or managerial probationary period unless this requirement has been met previously.
- Time-in-Grade: Federal employees must meet time-in-grade requirements within 30 days after the closing date of this announcement.
- You must meet all qualification requirements within 30 days after the closing date of this announcement and before placement in the position.
Qualifications
To qualify as a GS-13, you must possess one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-12 level in the Federal Service.
Specialized Experience: Specialized experience is experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled. Specialized Experience is defined as providing legal and support services for all intake/papering processing services; assigning work projects and monitoring established deadlines; providing training in new procedures, processes, and methods; preparing a variety of legal documents, jackets and citations; maintaining communication with attorneys, law enforcement agencies, the Courts, and support organizations to keep them informed, ensure cooperation, and resolve problem areas; conducting legal research, criminal history checks, and background investigations utilizing computerized criminal justice systems; supervising legal support staff.
