This position has a working title of Hospitalist and is in the Inpatient Unit within the Division of Clinical Services at Kayenta Health Center. The purpose of this position is to serve as a Medical expert within the specialty area of Hospitalist Medicine, the incumbent assumes responsibility for the diagnosis, care and treatment of patients.

Duties

The incumbent: Interviews and examines patients, reviews past medical history, and requests and/or performs diagnostic tests and examinations deemed necessary to obtain all appropriate information related to each case. Makes preliminary diagnoses, directs, prescribes or provides treatment, or arranges for specialized care or patient referral as required. Bases decisions upon information obtained, professional medical knowledge, skills, and prescribed policies and procedures. Makes notes of observations to be incorporated into clinical records. Provides urgent and emergency care as required. Provides definitive management of emergency care cases that do not require referral. Refers patients to appropriate contract medical or other government facilities, provides full clinical information for care and diagnostic procedures that cannot be adequately provided by local IHS facilities. Coordinates and integrates information obtained into the ongoing Health Care Program at the Service Unit and assures that timely follow-up care is arranged. Responds to acute emergency interventions, working closely in consultation with members of other medical departments as deemed appropriate by the clinical problem. Works with allied health professionals, i.e. Community Health Nurses, Social Workers, Health Educators, etc., in the management of the patient's medical, psychological and social problems. Serves as an expert in the specialized area and assumes appropriate administrative duties as assigned by the supervisor. The first Cut-off date for receipt/referral of applications to be considered for available vacant positions will be 15 days after the JOA open date. Qualifications

To qualify for this position, your resume must state sufficient experience and/or education, to perform the duties of the specific position for which you are applying. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer and part time experience. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week. BASIC REQUIREMENT(S): Degree: Doctor of Medicine, Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine or equivalent from a school in the United States or Canada. This degree must have been accredited by the Council on Medical Education of the American Medical Association(external link); Association of American Medical Colleges(external link); Liaison Committee on Medical Education(external link); Commission on Osteopathic College Accreditation of the American Osteopathic Association(external link), or an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education(external link) at the time the degree was obtained. Degree from Foreign Medical School: A Doctor of Medicine or equivalent degree from a foreign medical school must provide education and medical knowledge equivalent to accredited schools in the United States. Evidence of equivalency to accredited schools in the United States is demonstrated by permanent certification by the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates(external link), a fifth pathway certificate for Americans who completed premedical education in the United States and graduate education in a foreign country, or successful completion of the U.S. Medical Licensing Examination. Licensure: For all grade levels and positions, applicants must possess a current, active, full, and unrestricted license or registration as a Physician from a State, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the United States.NOTE: An agency may waive the licensure requirement for research positions not involving direct patient care. Graduate Training: Subsequent to obtaining a Doctor of Medicine or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine degree, a candidate must have had at least 1 year of supervised experience providing direct service in a clinical setting, i.e., a 1-year internship or the first year of a residency program in a hospital or an institution accredited for such training. For purposes of this standard, graduate training programs include only those internship, residency, and fellowship programs that are approved by accrediting bodies recognized within the United States or Canada. Descriptions of such programs are described below. An internship program involves broadly based clinical practice in which physicians acquire experience in treating a variety of medical problems under supervision (e.g., internal medicine, surgery, general practice, obstetrics-gynecology, and pediatrics). Such programs are in hospitals or other institutions accredited for internship training by a recognized body of the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME)(external link). A residency program involves training in a specialized field of medicine in a hospital or an institution accredited for training in the specialty by a recognized body of the American Medical Association (external link), (AMA) or Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) (external link). A fellowship program involves advanced training (beyond residency training) in a given medical specialty in either a clinical or research setting in a hospital or an institution accredited in the United States for such training. In addition to the Basic Requirements, you must also meet the Minimum Qualifications stated below. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: GS-15 Grade Level: 5 years of graduate training in the specialty of the position to be filled or equivalent experience or internship and residency. Your resume must demonstrate at least one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector performing the following type of work and/or tasks: Interviews and examines patients making preliminary diagnoses, directs, organizing and analyzing patient records to ensure patients are prescribed or provided treatment (i.e. treating a range of internal disorders, including hypertension, heart disease, and diabetes), communicates test results, treatment options, and risks to patients; arranges for specialized care or patient referral as required. Board Certification, not required but preferred. Time In Grade Federal employees in the competitive service are also subject to the Time-In-Grade Requirements: Merit Promotion (status) candidates must have completed one year of service at the next lower grade level. Time-In-Grade provisions do not apply under the Excepted Service Examining Plan (ESEP). You must meet all qualification requirements within 30 days of the closing date of the announcement.
