Duties

Joining the Customs and Border Protection Office of Facilities and Asset Management will allow you to serve as a team leader for the maintenance, repair, and construction of facilities. This position starts at a salary of $29.43 (WL-10, Step 1) to $34.31 (WL-05, Step 05) with promotion potential to $34.31(WL-10 Step 05). Salary: Salary will be adjusted to the hourly rate applicable at the duty station for which you are selected. Hourly Rate: The hourly rate listed reflects the El Paso, TX wage schedule. Refer to the Federal Wage (FWS) website for additional wage schedule and hourly rate information. In this Maintenance Mechanic Work Leader position, you will become a key member of Homeland Security professionals. Typical work assignments may include: Planning, reviewing and prioritizing, in conjunction with the respective supervisors, incoming work orders. Coordinating with customers on determining work schedules and identifying when work will be completed, taking into account other projects and responsibilities. Repairing and maintaining facilities, buildings, grounds, and related structures, fixtures, and utilities while understanding and incorporating blue prints, factory manuals, and operating manuals sufficient to accomplish the described tasks. Assisting other maintenance personnel with assignments, responsibilities, and duties by determining the best course of action and assisting with gathering required resources and supplies; Addressing and providing guidance and viable solutions on emergency repair situations (may also serve as safety officer). Ensuring a high level of quality is met on all work orders and that work orders are fully completed and tracked correctly; Coordinate with contractors and provide on-site guidance as needed.

Qualifications

Although a specific length of time and experience is not required for most trade and labor occupations, you must show through experience and training that you possess the quality level of knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties of the position at the level for which you are applying. Qualification requirements emphasis is on quality of experience, not necessarily the length of time. Experience: To minimally qualify for the WL-10 grade level you must meet the Screen Out Element {Ability To Lead or Supervise}. To meet the screen out element, you should haveexperience performing the following duties: Training or experience in at least two of the following building maintenance trades: Electrical, Pipefitting, Air Conditioning, Painting, Plumbing, and Carpentry. Completing a variety of tasks in these trades and be capable of reading and understanding blueprints, factory manuals, and operating manuals sufficient to accomplish the described tasks. Utilizing tools, equipment, and materials used by maintenance mechanics. Failure to meet this Screen out Element will result in an ineligible rating. In addition to the experience described above, you will also be evaluated on the basis of your overall level of competency (knowledge, skills, and abilities) in the following areas: Knowledge of equipment assembly, installation, repair, etc.; Ability to use measuring instruments; Ability to interpret instructions, specifications, etc. (includes blueprinting reading); Ability to use and maintain tools and equipment; and Knowledge of materials. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. You must: Meet all qualification requirements, including education if applicable to this position, subject to verification at any stage of the application process; and Meet all applicable Time in Grade requirements (current federal employees must have served 52 weeks at the next lower grade or equivalent grade band in the federal service) by 08/18/2023. The Office of Personnel Management (OPM) must authorize employment offers made to current or former political appointees. Current and former federal employees may be required to serve or complete a probationary period.
