About the Position: Fort Drum, home of the 10th Mountain Division (Light Infantry), is located in Northern New York and is approximately 30 miles from Canada, with the Great Lakes to the west, and Adirondack Mountains to the east. Duties

Serve as a Captain responsible for oversight and direction of the day-to-day operations of a fire station for an assigned shift. Take charge of all firefighting activities at the scene in the absence of the Fire Chief or Assistant Fire Chief. May supervise the performance of Hazardous Materials (HAZMAT) containment and control duties, and/or basic, intermediate, or paramedic duties. Oversee the control and extinguishing of fires, rescuing of people endangered by fire, and reduction or elimination of potential fire hazards involving airfield, structural firefighting, and crash rescue. Direct the operation of firefighting vehicles such as pumpers, aerial ladder trucks, crash-rescue trucks, and airport rescue vehicles. Assign work to subordinates based on priorities, difficulty of assignments, and the capabilities of employees; develops performance standards and rates employees; interviews candidates for subordinate positions. Identify developmental and training needs of employees; and provides and/or arranges for needed development and training. Provide a work environment that is free from all forms of discrimination, harassment, and retaliation.

Requirements

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • This position requires the completion of pre-employment and periodic subsequent medical examination in accordance with DoDM 6055.06 to ensure continued, required level of physical health and ability or fitness to perform the duties of the position.
  • This position has a requirement to lift up to 45lbs. in the regular performance of duties.
  • The duties of this position meet the criteria for compliance with Federal and Department of the Army Drug Free Workplace Programs. Detection of the presence of drugs is warranted.
  • This position is subject to a pre-employment screening, and random testing thereafter, to include testing based on reasonable suspicion and testing due to direct involvement with an on-duty accident.
  • This position has been designated Mission Essential. In the event of severe weather conditions or other such emergency type situations the incumbent is required to report to work or remain at work as scheduled to support mission operations.
  • This position requires the employee to use personal protective equipment provided by the employer.
  • This position requires the incumbent to wear the prescribed uniform and/or personal protective equipment while on duty.
  • The duties of this position require the incumbent to possess or obtain and maintain a valid state Driver's License in one of the 50 U.S. states or possessions to operate vehicles.
  • This position requires participation in a physical fitness program.
  • Incumbent is on call 24 hours a day, 7 days a week unless in a Temporary Duty (TDY) status or on leave.
  • Incumbent works a minimum of a 72 hour week.
  • Incumbent must obtain and maintain a valid Government driver's license.
  • Travel away from normal duty station 5% of the time.

For this job, you must meet the qualification requirement using experience alone -- no substitution of education for experience is permitted. SELECTIVE PLACEMENT FACTORS: This position requires the incumbent to possess and maintain ALL of the following Department of Defense, IFSAC or Pro Board certifications: Fire Officer II, Fire Instructor I, Fire Inspector I, Hazardous Materials Incident Commander, and Airport Fire Fighter. This position also requires the incumbent to possess and maintain a National Registry Emergency Medical Technician Basic or State equivalent Emergency Medical Technician Basic certification.
