You will serve as a Physical Science Technician in the Sample Receiving Office, Laboratory Division of the Quality Assurance Office
PSNS and IMF.
Duties
You will guide customers on laboratory test requests, requirements for receipt and disposition of samples, as well as sample integrity and preservation procedures.
You will perform sample inspection and preservation and maintain sample custody.
You will ensure sample integrity by storing samples in appropriate manner per laboratory requirements.
You will perform receipt inspection of materials and standards and upload and maintain the laboratory's online certificate of analysis database.
You will manage sample labels, sample analysis request forms, and other documents updating and improving them as needed to meet changing laboratory and customer requirements.
You will address sample and test request discrepancies with the customers and respective analysts to obtain and correct missing or unclear information.
You will act as the liaison between the customer and laboratory technical managers and analysts, ensuring technical inquiries are routed to appropriate personnel for resolution.
You will interpret environmental and technical requirements by reviewing background information submitted with samples such as test documents, specifications, customer provided forms, and the shipyard's SharePoint network, links, and applications.
You will utilize software such as the Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS) to log in received samples, schedule tests, and determine sample status when requested by customers.
You will participate in the laboratory quality improvement program, by maintaining and updating standard operating procedures concerning sample receipt and handling, and LIMS login guidelines.

- You will be required to wear personal protective equipment such as helmets, gloves, coveralls, glasses, goggles, respirators and safety shoes continuously for the duration of the work shift.
- Work is performed in areas where potentially harmful physical and chemical agents are present (e.g. fumes, dust, heat, ionizing and non-ionizing radiation and chemicals). You will be required to participate in medical surveillance programs.
- This position may require travel from normal duty station to CONUS and OCONUS and may include remote or isolated sites. You must be able to travel on military and commercial aircraft for extended periods of time.
Qualifications
Your resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-08 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. Specialized experience must demonstrate the following: coordinating and monitoring laboratory test requests for receipt, custody and disposition of samples, (i.e., hazardous wastes, oils, waters, etc.), ensuring sample integrity and preservation procedures are in compliance with requirements.

- Successfully completed two full years of graduate level education that is directly related to the position being filled. OR;
- Successfully completed a master's degree that is directly related to the position being filled. OR;
- A combination of experience and graduate level education as described above that equates to one year of experience.
