The Department of Labor seeks a talented paralegal to join its Black Lung and Longshore Legal Services Division. The Division covers a variety of legal and administrative matters related to the Black Lung Benefits Act and the Longshore and Harbor Workers' Compensation Act, as well as FOIA and other laws.
This position is inside the bargaining unit.
Requirements
- Must be a U.S. Citizen.
- Must be at least 16 years old.
- Candidate required to obtain the necessary security/investigation level.
- Requires a probationary period if the requirement has not been met.
Qualifications
If applicable, applicants must meet the eligibility requirements of time-in-grade (52 weeks at the next lower grade), time-after-competitive-appointment (90 days), and minimum qualifications (52 weeks equivalent to the next lower grade in federal service). These requirements must be met within 30 days of the announcement closing date.

You must meet the Basic Requirements listed in the "Education Requirements" section and the "Specialized Experience" to qualify for Paralegal Specialist, as described below.
For the GS-12: Applicants 2 full years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to such a degree or LL.B. or J.D., if related.
OR
Applicants must have 52 weeks of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level in the Federal Service.
Applicants applying for the GS-12 must have at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-11.
Specialized experience at this level includes knowledge of appellate litigation procedures of Black Lung and Longshore cases including: independently providing legal assistance to multiple attorneys by using various sources and databases (e.g., Westlaw, CyberFeds, PACER, Lexis Nexis, etc.) to find case status and filings and applicable legal authority; cite checking; preparing tables of contents and authorities for legal briefs; creating and maintaining records in case management software, and creating reports from the software as needed; checking for completeness of files, and obtaining documents from courts, opposing counsel and other sources as necessary; and maintaining various electronic brief banks of court cases, briefs, and legal opinions.
For this position, applicants may qualify using a combination of education and/or experience, if applicable. If an applicant chooses to utilize education in addition to or in lieu of experience, proof of successful completion of degree must be provided.
