Duties
Provides advisory and clinical support to patients and/or parents/individuals for face-to-face counseling and education.
Participates in clinical research by providing consultative assistance, literature reviews, protocol design, development of informed consent documents, and all other aspects of clinical research.
Collects biological samples, assurance of adequate shipping and handling, resolution of billing questions, return of results.
Provides comprehensive genetic counseling to the entire spectrum.
Utilizes a dynamic array of resources to provide a genetic risk assessment.
Provides input towards new approaches to patient service based on past experience and newly learned techniques and participates and contributes to the development of standard operating procedures.
Organizes, coordinates, and facilitates genetic education efforts in the Region, and maintains a comprehensive set of genetic counseling skills.
Requirements
- Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
- A Personnel Security Investigation is required.
- Selectees will be required to sign a statement (Condition of Employment) consenting to seasonal influenza vaccinations or must provide a recognized exemption.
- A pre-placement medical examination is required.
- Immunization screening is required. Hepatitis B immunization is required for all positions with direct patient contact. Applicants may be required to show proof of other immunizations depending on the type of position.
- This position requires the incumbent be able to obtain and maintain a determination of eligibility for a Secret security clearance or access for the duration of employment. A background investigation and credit check are required.
- This position is a Testing Designated Position subject to pre-employment screening and random drug testing. Selectees will be required to consent to participation in random drug urinalysis testing.

Basic Requirements for Genetic Counselor
Education
Bachelor's or graduate/higher level degree: major study in an academic field related to the medical field, health sciences or allied sciences appropriate to the work of the position. This degree must be from an educational program from an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education (external link) at the time the degree was obtained. (You MUST submit a copy of your transcript with your application package or you will be rated ineligible.)
In addition to meeting the basic requirement above, to qualify for this position you must also meet the qualification requirements listed below:
Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes providing genetic counseling services to identify the etiology of the disease and recurrence risk and develops curricula, coordinates, and facilitates genetic education efforts and collecting comprehensive genetic histories and family histories and providing psychosocial support for providing clear explanations of the genetic evaluation and counseling process. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the second lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-11).
Education
FOREIGN EDUCATION: If you are using education completed in foreign colleges or universities to meet the qualification requirements, you must show the education credentials have been evaluated by a private organization that specializes in interpretation of foreign education programs and such education has been deemed equivalent to that gained in an accredited U.S. education program; or full credit has been given for the courses at a U.S. accredited college or university.
