The Maintenance Mechanic position is assigned Maintenance Shop, Engineering Service, located at the Central Iowa Health Care System Des Moines, Iowa, VA Midwest Health Care Network, (VISN 23), Veterans Health Administration, Department of Veterans Affairs, Omaha, NE.

Duties

Duties include, but are not limited to: Electrical: Understands the provisions of the National Electrical Code and be sufficiently knowledgeable in a variety of electrical systems and equipment with the necessary knowledge of codes to satisfactorily research special requirements or applications pertaining to voltage systems ranging from 10V to 13200V AC and DC. Works from plans and diagrams when necessary. Performs basic troubleshoots and repairs, and project requirement. Identifies electrical problems and define the repairs/upgrades required to ensure safe working and living environments throughout the facility. Defines repairs/upgrades and define required materials (bill of materials) tools and equipment requirements, and work assignments of subordinate maintenance workers through project completion. Carpentry: Measures, cuts, and constructs using standard building materials. Plans and completes projects that involve constructing, altering, repairing, and/or modifying framework, rafters, doors, finished paneling, windows, rough furniture, interior/exterior trim, staircases, trusses, and beams. Operates and uses a wide variety of specialty woodworking machines and tools. Operates and uses a variety of tools by setting-up, adjusting, and maintaining tools to meet required specifications. Plans and lays out carpentry projects. Plans measure and lay out carpentry materials using broad knowledge of wood materials and substitutes, with general and precision woodworking techniques. Plumbing: Repairs plumbing systems. Installing, modifying, and repairing new and existing utility, supply, and disposal systems. Repairs equipment such as sewage, water, oil, and gas distribution systems and water closets, tubs, fire sprinkler systems, and showers. Works from building plans, blueprints, and sketches, to plan and lay out the routing, placement, slant, slope, fall, and proper operation, of systems and equipment. Air Conditioning and Refrigeration: Maintenance Mechanic should have experience in the installation, repair, modification and preventive maintenance of heating, ventilation, air conditioning and refrigeration equipment. Assists other engineering personnel in interpreting blueprints, setting critical temperature controls and be able to provide instruction and training as needed. Operates building automation systems upon being trained. General Maintenance: Lays floor tile. Performs lock maintenance. Installs ceiling tile, lights and light fixtures, receptacles, and switches. Plasters, paints, and carpentry work. Maintains plumbing, such as minor repair of water and heating systems. Repairs chairs. Installs door closures and door stops. Hangs bulletin boards, pictures, mirrors, fans, clocks, etc. Installs casters on desks, chairs, food carts, etc. Mounts paper towel holders, signs, and corner guards. Installs safety treads on steps. Work Schedule: Monday-Friday; 6:30am-3:00pm. Recruitment & Relocation Incentives: Not authorized

PHYSICAL EFFORTS: The Maintenance Mechanic works from ladders, scaffolding and hydraulic platforms. The Maintenance Mechanic often works in portions of the utility systems requiring attention that are cramped, dirty and hard-to-reach locations. The work may involve prolonged crouching and standing and frequenting stooping, bending, kneeling, climbing and working in exhausting and uncomfortable positions. The Maintenance Mechanic frequently lifts or carries tools, equipment, ladders, scaffolding, parts and supplies up to fifty (50lbs) pounds. Occasionally, the Maintenance Mechanic will be required to lift and carry items over fifty (50lbs) pounds. AND WORK CONDITIONS: The Maintenance Mechanic may be exposed to a full array of weather conditions. Subject to danger or falling when working from ladders or hydraulic lifts. Exposed to dust/dirt while mixing mortar and handling materials. Work is performed in all areas of the hospital environment, inside and outside. Work is often dirty, dusty and greasy. The Maintenance Mechanic is subjected to such hazardous conditions as injury from power driven tools, falling from scaffolds and ladders, temperature extremes, noise, and bad weather conditions. The Maintenance Mechanic is frequently exposed to the possibilities of cuts, bruises, scratches, broken bones, and burns. The Maintenance Mechanic is subject to asbestos exposure and chemicals which can cause burns or irritation to the skin. Some duties may require the Maintenance Mechanic to wear protective equipment and clothing that is heavy and uncomfortable. Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualifications. All experience listed on your resume must include the month and year start/end dates. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities.
