The Maintenance Mechanic position will be located in the Engineering Department at the Department of Veterans Affairs Central Iowa Healthcare System, Des Moines, Iowa.
Duties
Major duties include, but are not limited to:
Carpentry - Plans, measures and lays out projects involving constructing, altering, repairing, and/or modifying flooring, walls, doors, windows, ceilings and other building components.
Painting - Prepares surfaces and uses appropriate coating techniques that ensure surfaces have a smooth-textured and decorative appearance and meet thickness and level requirements. Determines the methods, techniques, devices, and materials that are best suited to the surface finish required. Maintains an inventory of paints and materials for.
Locksmith - Installs and repairs locksets and locking mechanisms throughout the facility. Manages and maintains the facility key and lock control system. Orders and maintains and inventory of locks, padlocks, key blanks, cabinet locks, etc. in amounts determined by the medical center needs and historical usage. Updates and maintains a database of keys and employees.
Concrete Finishing - Completes the final finishing of concrete, and works on difficult projects, requiring more precise measurements and setting forms in curved as well as straight lines. Utilizes comprehensive knowledge of concrete finishing to plan work methods and sequences, lay out the work to be done, determine materials to be used, select proper tools, and accomplish the job in accordance with appropriate methods and accepted trade practices.
Maintenance and Repairs - Performs routine maintenance and repair activities involving carpentry, painting, locksmith, masonry and other trades as assigned. Completes maintenance and repair work in accordance with the work order program, and accurately records time and materials used.
Work Schedule: Monday - Friday, 7am until 3:30pm.

Qualifications
PHYSICAL EFFORT AND WORK CONDITIONS: Work requires considerable bending, kneeling and stooping. If the assignment is located at a jobsite, strenuous physical exertion may be required when handling heavy/bulky materials such as sheets of plywood or other building/construction materials. Use of manual or portable power tools for extended periods of time in uncomfortable positions. Construction work typically requires bending, stooping, climbing on ladders, scaffolding and rooftops. Lifts and moves materials weighing up to 40 Ibs. With assistance may lift/move heavier items.
When working in shop areas, could be exposed to moderate or high noise levels from machinery, sawdust, glue fumes and hazards related to power equipment. When completing maintenance or repair, or working at project/construction sites, exposed to prevailing weather conditions and hazards associated with working on/around scaffolding and ladders. Subject to cuts, bruises and contusions. May work in confined areas such as crawl spaces and attics that are typically dusty and dirty. Must wear proper protective equipment for all of these conditions.
