Duties

- Performs professional scientific materials analysis in the areas of nuclear physics, chemistry, radiation safety. - Collaborates with national expert physicists, chemists, and nuclear engineers on the most complex or highly unusual issues. - Researches, collaborates, applies research and development (R&D) fundamentals. Maintain knowledge of current relevant R&D programs in nuclear sciences; identifies state-of-the-art developments which may have application to improving mission capabilities; proposes and leads mission enhancing and cost saving alternatives; and applies new theories unique to situations for which there are no precedents. - Represents organization at technical discussions, conferences, and symposia with DoD and other government agencies, contractors, international agencies and professional scientific societies.

  • Bachelor?s degree in physics, chemistry or materials science is highly desired

Qualifications

This is a GG-12 position in the Defense Civilian Intelligence Personnel System (DCIPS). The GG-12 duties for the "Professional" work category are at the "Full Performance" work level and are equivalent to those at the GS-12 level. The selectee's salary will be set within the grade equivalent to a GS/GG grade based on the selectee's qualifications in relation to the job. In order to qualify, you must meet the specialized experience requirements described in the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualification Standards for General Schedule Positions, Professional and Scientific Positions. BASIC REQUIREMENT OR INDIVIDUAL OCCUPATIONAL REQUIREMENT: Degree: physical science, engineering, or mathematics that included 24 semester hours in physical science and/or related engineering science such as mechanics, dynamics, properties of materials, and electronics. OR Combination of education and experience -- education equivalent to one of the majors shown in A above that included at least 24 semester hours in physical science and/or related engineering science, plus appropriate experience or additional education. In addition to meeting the basic requirement above, to qualify for this position you must also meet the qualification requirements listed below: EXPERIENCE REQUIRED: Your resume must reflect the quality level of experience which demonstrates the possession of the knowledge, skills, abilities, and competencies necessary for successful job performance required for this position. Examples of creditable experience include: knowledge of a wide range of concepts, principles, and practices of science at a detailed level that enables one to serve as the flight's technical authority on scanning electron microscopy and related nuclear particle analysis technologies. Note: Creditable experience may include previous military experience, experience gained in the private sector, or experience gained in another government agency. AND KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (KSAs): Your qualifications will be evaluated on the basis of your level of knowledge, skills, abilities and/or competencies in the following areas: 1. Substantial professional knowledge of chemistry, physics, and nuclear sample analysis techniques. 2. In-depth knowledge of mission requirements for the detection, identification, and location of nuclear detonations. 3. Ability to evaluate highly complex scientific information in relation to scientific theory and observed results; and to apply sound scientific judgment in addressing unprecedented situations. 4. Substantial ability and experience assembling, maintaining, and operating gamma spectrometers, radiographic imaging equipment, scanning electron microscopes, and x-ray diffractometers. Substantial experience with a wide variety of electro-mechanical hardware and software; and troubleshooting skills. 5. Knowledge of contamination control practices; and ability to perform operational responsibilities in a Class-100/ISO-5 cleanroom environment. 6. Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing, in order to produce scientific reports and high-level briefings; and maintain good working relationships. CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT CONTINUED: Position is designated special-sensitive and requires eligibility for access to Sensitive Compartmented Information (SCI), other intelligence-related Special Sensitive information, or involvement in Top Secret Special Access Programs (SAP) to fully perform the duties and responsibilities of the position. A non-disclosure agreement must be signed. Drug Testing: This position has been designated by the Air Force as a Testing Designated Position (TDP) under the Air Force Civilian Drug Demand Reduction Program. Employee must pass initial and periodic short notice drug testing. Illegal drug use by employees in sensitive positions presents a clear threat to the mission of the Air Force, national security, and public safety. PART-TIME OR UNPAID EXPERIENCE: Credit will be given for appropriate unpaid and or part-time work. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week. VOLUNTEER WORK EXPERIENCE: Refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service Programs (i.e., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student and social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge and skills that can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
