About the Position: This position is assigned to the Office of the Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for Military Community and Family Policy (DASD (MC&FP), Assistant Secretary of Defense for Manpower and Reserve Affairs (M&RA), Office of the Under Secretary of Defense, Personnel and Readiness (USD (P&R)).

Duties

Develop, coordinate, evaluate, integrate, and analyze policies and issues among the Military Departments and within the Department of Defense (DoD). Plan and advise Military Community and Family Policy operations and provide insight and expertise on controls and coordination to meet the needs of service members and their families to balance their mission and family responsibilities. Lead strategic planning for the directorate focused on timely response to needs within the military community. Provide policy and oversight of Service member and family issues within the DoD as related to Family Support, the Office of Special Needs, Spouse Education and Career Opportunities, and Online Learning. Conduct numerous, high-priority special assignments that are typically unprecedented and complex, with scope and magnitude unknown at the beginning. Analyze conflicting and divergent viewpoints in order to provide full and accurate background information, along with options for courses of action. Review programs for potential efficiencies to include Joint Service initiatives and contracting opportunities. Maintain a high level of awareness of requirements for regulatory guidance and regulations, management principles, program research, program requirements and the application of technology as related to military community and family programs. Perform a full range of first-level supervisory responsibilities; plan work to be accomplished by subordinates, ses and adjuss short-term priorities, and prepares schedules for completion of work. Serve as the Director of Service Member and Family Readiness with oversight of the Office of Special Needs, Spouse Education and Career Opportunities, Online Learning, and Family Readiness Policy.

Requirements

Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes evaluating support programs addressing the needs of service members and/or their families, collaborating with various stakeholders to develop strategic plans, developing policy for service member and/or family issue support programs, developing goals, measures, and/or objectives advancing programming for the needs of service members and their families, and performing a full range of first-level supervisory responsibilities, such as, assigning work to subordinates, evaluating work performance of subordinates, interviewing candidates for positions and identifying training needs of employees. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-14). Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. For this job, you must meet the qualification requirement using experience alone--no substitution of education for experience is permitted. A writing sample may be required by management within the interview process.
