As an AST, Engineering Project Management (Chief Engineer) with the Uninhabited Aircraft Systems (UAS) Operations Office, Research Services Directorate, you will serve as the independent technical authority for all UAS flight operations. You will be responsible for leading a team of engineers and technicians (contractors and civil servants) who will be managing the flow and execution of all UAS research, design, project planning, and vehicle/system integration.
Duties
Serves as the Uninhabited Aerial Systems (UAS) Operations Office Chief Engineer and is the independent technical authority for all UAS flight operations.
Conducts Technical Interchange Meetings to identify research needs, understand project requirements and aircraft modifications, discuss required reviews, assess initial risk of the operations, and gather information for proper resource allocation.
Participates in project technical reviews and working groups.
Leads the Operational Readiness Review/Flight Readiness Review to ensure risks are documented and understood, operations are clearly defined, and all logistics, scheduling, and resources for its intended mission are properly allocated and scheduled.
Team Lead for UAS Operations Office engineers and lab technicians.
Coordinates with the Airworthiness Review Board and the airworthiness inspector for the issuance of airworthiness statements and manages organization of all technical data on UAS Operations Office SharePoint site.
Serves as the CERTAIN Range UAS Project Manager providing vision and direction for technical and operational capabilities and advocates for CERTAIN funding and capability investment to expand UAS flight operations capabilities.
Represents NASA Langley Research Center in discussions with other centers or partners to expand the capability of Langley in regard to UAS flight operations.

Qualifications
In addition to the Basic Education Requirement (in the Education section below), to qualify for this position you must meet the requirements below and have one year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade, which has equipped you with the particular competencies needed to successfully perform the duties of the position described above.
NASA utilizes OPM-approved qualification and rating requirements specific for Aerospace Technology (AST) positions which recognizes NASA's unique aerospace work. The specific qualifications and minimum education requirements are further described below and within the education section of the job announcement.
To qualify for GS-15, you must have one year of directly related specialized experience equivalent to the GS-14 level.
operating Uninhabited Aircraft Systems (UAS) and/or participating in UAS flight operations;
providing technical oversight of projects to include project system design, system performance and documentation/correction of deficiencies;
leading, managing, or guiding teams in the accomplishment of a set of goals or objectives; and
interacting with internal or external organizations and partners to resource a particular capability, execute a joint task, or enter into a mutually beneficial agreement to ensure mission success.

Education
Basic Education Requirement: You must have successfully completed a bachelor's degree with a major in one of the following:
a) Engineering from a college or university that has ABET accredited engineering programs
b) Physical Science, Mathematics, Life Science or other field of Science
c) Computer Science that included 30 semester hours or 45 quarter hours of course work in any combination of mathematics, statistics and computer science with at least half of those hours in mathematics and statistics courses that included differential and integral calculus.
If you did not complete a qualifying bachelor's degree, you may be eligible if you have obtained a graduate degree in an AST qualifying field, as listed above.
Degrees in engineering technology are
not considered qualifying for this position.
