Duties
As a Government Information Specialist, some of your typical work assignments may include:
Requirements
- You must be a U.S. Citizen or National.
- You must provide your SF-50 (see Required Documents section).
- A one-year probationary period may be required.
- A background investigation is required.
- This is a bargaining unit position.
- Generally, male applicants must be registered with the Selective Service.
- If using education to qualify, you must submit transcripts.
- Relocation expenses will not be paid.
- You may be required to divest certain energy-related securities.

GS-12 Level
You must have one full year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-11 level. Specialized experience is defined as:
• Responding to routine Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) requests and other disclosure inquiries from a range of internal and external individuals or groups under general supervision; • Drafting FOIA response letters which describe the information released, or the justification for withholding information based on applicable FOIA exemptions for supervisory approval/signature; • Managing records and electronic files in accordance with established records retention rules and regulations; • Providing advice and guidance to individuals at all levels to serve as a FOIA authority; AND• Coordinating with legal for clearance and recommendation for FOIA releases.
GS-13 Level
You must have one full year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-12 level. Specialized experience is defined as:
• Responding to non-routine and routine Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) requests and other disclosure inquiries from a range of internal and external individuals or groups under general supervision; • Drafting FOIA response letters which describe the information released, or the justification for withholding information based on applicable FOIA exemptions for supervisory approval/signature; • Evaluating, analyzing, and redacting information for a disclosure determination that complies with rules, regulations, and procedures; • Managing records and electronic files in accordance with established records retention rules and regulations; • Monitoring and tracking projects and FOIA requests, appeals, and litigation assignments; • Providing advice and guidance to individuals at all levels to serve as a FOIA authority; AND• Coordinating with legal for clearance and recommendation for FOIA releases.
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills, and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including any volunteer experience.
