Duties
The primary duties of this position include:
Carry out assignments after receiving initial instructions regarding work to be accomplished and location of work site.
Call upon or seeks assistance from supervisor or others when additional information is needed or should be shared.
Has knowledge of ICC rules and regulations, State, Federal, and local laws pertinent to transportation of heavy equipment. Operates several different types of heavy equipment. Steers and operates by using clutches, levers, brakes, and valves; according to the surface conditions.
Responsible for safe operations, applications and adherence to all safety regulation.
Operate equipment and attachments; good depth perception and a high degree of concentration to perform the operations; basic knowledge of a variety of soil compositions as well as knowledge of the purpose and limitations of the various attachments; skill in handling the controls to perform the work; ability to adjust attachments on most types of terrain.
Operate equipment close to trees, rocks, and other obstructions. Exercises judgment in operation of all equipment.
Safety practices and procedures are adhered to in order to ensure the safety of the incumbent, fellow employees, and the public.
Extensive shift work, including long hours, with the standard shift being 10 days in length. Out-of-town travel will be required, approximately 85-percent of the time, in a variety of conditions and in some remote areas.
Work Conditions: Work is performed in all types of weather, on hills, slopes, grades, rolling surfaces, and forested areas. The operator is exposed to injury due to the possibility of the equipment overturning. Incumbent is subject to noise, vibration, dust, dirt, and fumes from the motor and exhaust. The incumbent must pay close attention to the equipment, attachments, and terrain.
Physical Effort: Heavy physical effort is used in constantly reaching, bending, turning, and moving hands, arms, feet, and legs to handle different sets of controls to operate the equipment and attachments. Considerable strain is caused by the constant vibration of the equipment and the jerking and jolting from operating over rough surfaces.
Work schedule: Consists of ten (10) consecutive work days of 10-hour shifts, with four (4) consecutive days off. On certain projects there will be variable travel (in or out-of-town) with a work schedule of five (5) consecutive work days of 8- to 10-hour shifts, with two (2) consecutive days off. Overtime and weekend work may also be required.
