This position is located at the Kayenta Service Unit, Division of Nursing Services, Emergency Room Branch, Kayenta, AZ. The purpose of this position is for provision of reception duties, assisting the registered nurse and the physician with patient care services as appropriate and to maintain supplies/equipment including efficient, effective, timely and culturally sensitive health care services to trauma, emergent and non-emergent patients. Works under the supervision of the Supervisory Nurse.

Duties

Assesses patient's conditions by interviewing patients, through review of patient's care systems, and review of patient's medical record. Continually monitors an assesses patient's clinical condition. In emergency situations when providers or charge nurse is not immediately available will initiate appropriate action such as Basic Life Support measure for respiratory or cardiac emergencies. Participates in developing, implementing, and evaluating standards of care including performance improvement measures. Participates in patient education activities and documents instructions given. Documents accurately in Electronic Health Record (EHR). Replenishes patient care supplies and assist with inventory and ordering of direct care items. Maintains a safe and clean work environment in the Emergency Room Department and triage. Assists in moving, transferring and lifting patients when needed using appropriate body mechanics or assistive devices. Assist in obtaining equipment for inhalation therapy, urinary catheterizations, and intravenous cannulations. Sets up exam rooms with necessary instruments and supplies. Assists medical provider with diagnostic procedures such as lumbar punctures, aspiration procedures throat cultures wound cultures, and other cultures by setting up specialized trays. Shares in the responsibility of the maintenance of clinical records by recording vital signs, height and weight; intake and output; and any observation relative to patient's condition and reaction; medication administered, and any patient care given. Perform the following procedures: 12 lead EKG and rhythm strips; phlebotomy on patients of all ages; properly identifies patients with two identifiers prior to phlebotomy; obtains lab specimens; urine, throat cultures, wound cultures, etc. Setup and operates non-stress test for clients in labor. Performs waived testing such as urinalysis, blood glucose, rapid strep testing, etc. Sets up supplies for intravenous cannulation for the purpose of specimen collection and the placement of saline locks by a registered nurse. Performs veni-puncture and finger sticks to obtain blood specimens for laboratory testing. Assist in preparation of patient admission and transport by assembling and preparing patient records, transport orders, etc. Will be responsible for special assignment by being the resource person for proper preparation of maintenance request forms, bio-med request forms, inventory of patient care equipment and supplies, etc. Participates in development, implementation, and evaluation of standards of care and performance improvement measures and activities.

Qualifications

To qualify for this position, your resume must state sufficient experience and/or education, to perform the duties of the specific position for which you are applying. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer and part time experience. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week. Individual Occupational Requirements: Specialized experience: Positions in this series range widely in type and include support duties to medical or health personnel such as audiologists, speech pathologists, medical officers, and optometrists. Therefore, technician experience is experience that required application of the knowledge, methods, and techniques of the position to be filled. For GS-05: Candidate must have at least one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-4 grade level to qualify for the GS-5 level. Example of experience: measure height, weight, vital signs; assist with patient/client visits; documents all patient/client encounters & activities; serves as a liaison; organize & provide training for current software application; etc. OR Education and Training: For GS-5: Successful completion of a full 4 year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree, with major study or at least 24 semester hours in subjects directly related to the position. NOTE: Graduate education or an internship meets the specialized experience required above the GS-5 only in those instances where it is directly related to the work of the position. For GS-06: Candidate must have at least one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-5 grade level to qualify for the GS-6 level. Example of experience: Non-professional work of a technical or support nature in the field of health and medicine, such as taking vital signs; determining what the provider needs to treat the patient, monitoring patient's conditions by interviewing patient; assisting with the following: administrative support, assisting with activities of daily living, taking and monitoring vital signs, preparing for procedures setups (suturing, etc.), preparing patient rooms prior to use and cleaning afterwards, assisting staff with resuscitation skills (using bag-valve mask; chest compressions) and assisting doctors and nurses with treatment needs. Time In Grade Federal employees in the competitive service are also subject to the Time-In-Grade Requirements: Merit Promotion (status) candidates must have completed one year of service at the next lower grade level. Time-In-Grade provisions do not apply under the Excepted Service Examining Plan (ESEP). You must meet all qualification requirements within 30 days of the closing date of the announcement.
