This position is announced by the Federal Law Enforcement Training Centers on behalf of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), Office of the Secretary, Under Secretary for Management, Office of the Chief Readiness Support Officer (CRSO). CRSO is responsible for unified headquarters consolidation strategy and policy for DHS and conducts strategic planning analysis, and development in support of the DHS strategic consolidation plan.

Duties

This position is located in the Headquarters Support Component safety and occupational health in the Office of Operations Support, Chief Readiness Support Officer, in the Under Secretary for Management. The purpose of the position is to formulate and implement the Department’s comprehensive safety and health risk management programs; develop and execute Department-wide policy, set priorities for the use of limited resources, and establish national Department-wide standards.

  • This position requires you to have access, safeguard, and store classified national security information on a regular basis. You must be able to obtain and maintain a Secret security clearance.

The qualification requirements listed below must be met by the closing date of this announcement. You must possess at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-12 grade level performing the following duties: 1) Implementing a comprehensive safety and health risk management program; 2) Investigating workplace hazards (i.e. chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear, explosive agents, ergonomics, personal protection, etc.) to identify areas or concern and recommend corrective actions; 3) Conducting investigations to determine agency compliance with establish safety and industrial hygiene standards and regulations; 4) Reviewing proposed renovations or new construction plans to identify possible health hazards and suggest corrective actions. Time-in-Grade: Current and former GS federal employees must have served 52 weeks at the GS-12 grade level in the federal service. The time-in-grade requirement must be met by the closing date of this announcement. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps and AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional, philanthropic, religious, spiritual, community, student, and social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. In addition to the qualifications listed above, you must possess the following level of education by the closing date of this announcement:  A. Successful completion of a Bachelor’s or graduate/higher level degree in industrial hygiene, occupational health sciences, occupational and environmental health, toxicology, safety sciences, or related science that was accredited by an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education at the time my degree was obtained. (Note - Courses in the history or teaching of chemistry are not acceptable). -OR- B. Successful completion of a Bachelor’s degree in a branch of engineering, physical science, or life science that included 12 semester hours in chemistry, including organic chemistry, and 18 additional semester hours of courses in any combination of chemistry, physics, engineering, health physics, environmental health, biostatistics, biology, physiology, toxicology, epidemiology, or industrial hygiene. The degree was accredited by an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education at the time my degree was obtained. (Note - Courses in the history or teaching of chemistry are not acceptable). -OR- C. A Certification from the American Board of Industrial Hygiene (ABIH). The Office of Personnel Management (OPM) must authorize employment offers made to current or former political appointees.
