About the Position: Serves as a Range Operations Technician for the U.S. Army Support Activity, Training Division, Range Support Branch, Fort Eustis, Virginia.

Duties

Serve as a Range Operations Technician responsible for scheduling and coordinating the use of the installation training ranges and facilities utilizing RFMSS Evaluate the seriousness of problems encountered in range safety matters and keeps the leadership informed of major problems and unusual work situations. Discuss with range safety officers the planning and setup of training exercises as they influence the daily schedule so that all operations can be conducted within acceptable hazard and damage limits. Assist in developing and enforcing regulatory requirements involving range inspections procedures and range communications procedures.

Requirements

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • Incumbent must pass pre-employment and annual medical examination.
  • Incumbent must pass pre-employment and spontaneous drug testing.
  • Must Have a Valid Virginia State Driver's License for operation of government vehicles in the performance of work.
  • This position is covered by the 1996 Lautenberg Amendment to the Gun Control Act of 1968. Persons convicted of a misdemeanor crime of domestic violence are not eligible for the position.
  • Incumbent is required to work evenings, nights and weekends on a rotating shift, to cover 24 hour a day, 7 day a week range operations.
  • Incumbent of this position may be required to work both planned and unscheduled overtime.

Specialized Experience for GS-08: One year of specialized experience which includes:1) Schedule/Approve/disapprove unit requests for range and training usage to determine number of personnel training, type of weapons to be fired, ammunition, arrival and departure times of the unit, and other pertinent data related to the training exercise utilizing Range Facility Management Support System (RFMSS); 2) Performs range safety operations functions to include on-site inspections of ranges and training areas, assists in conducting safety pre-briefing to military and civilian agencies using ranges, and investigates range accidents/incidents; 3) Monitor the issuance, opening, check fire, cease fire, and closing of all live fire ranges, training facilities, and training areas through operation/communication via multiple radio nets; 4) Operate automated targetry (TRACR) and Manage daily operations of the range control and perform actions necessary to verify that services or supplies conform to quality requirements. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-07). Time in Grade Requirement: Applicants who have held a General Schedule (GS) position within the last 52 weeks must have 52 weeks of Federal service at the next lower grade or equivalent (GS-07).
