The primary purpose of this position is to perform calibration and certification of electrical, electronic, and physical/dimensional Test, Measurement, and Diagnostic Equipment (TMDE), Laboratory Standards and Base Reference Standards. Uses Lab Standards and Base Reference Standards to ensure the functional accuracy and operational precision of electronic systems and equipment that must be calibrated to extreme precisions.

Duties

Adjust, calibrate, certify, troubleshoot & repair a variety of electrical, electronic, physical and dimensional test measurement diagnostic equipment (TMDE), and a variety of electrical electronic physical/ dimensional systems and reference standards. Coordinates efforts with technical and professional personnel. Maintains records and documents actions. Utilizes safety practices and procedures following established safety rules and regulations and maintains a safe and clean work environment.

  • Must keep abreast of the latest developments in the electronics/physical dimensional field and in state-of-the-art TMDE and laboratory standards
  • May be detailed to other areas and/or duties, as the mission requires
  • Graduation from the Air Force School of Metrology or certification from an equivalent course of study is highly desirable

Qualifications

QUALIFICATIONS: Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Qualification Standard Handbook X-118C for the WG-3300 Instrument Work Family. Although a specific length of time and experience is not required for most blue-collar positions, you must meet any screen-out element listed, and show through experience and training that you possess the quality level of knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties of the position at the level for which you are applying. Qualification requirements emphasis is on the quality of experience, not necessarily the length of time. The screen out element for this position is ability to do the work of a WG-3378 PRECISION MEASUREMENT EQUIPMENT CALIBRATOR more than normal without supervision. JOB ELEMENTS: Your qualifications will be evaluated on the basis of your level of knowledge, skills, abilities and/or competencies in the following areas: l. Ability to apply knowledge of metro logy (measurement science), mathematics, physics, electronics, circuit analysis using schematics, diagrams, detailed drawings and computer programming routines to adjust, calibrate and certify TMDE. 2. Understand and predict the progressive effects of uncertainties throughout the interrelated units; trace the effect of a change in one subsystem on other subsystems and determine which controls and devices must be adjusted to compensate; apply test uncertainty ratio calculations to determine suitability of calibration standards or to determine adequacy of substitute standard. 3. Ability to analyze and troubleshoot interface problems between instruments, instrument controllers and sensors in complex test and measurement systems; skill in tracing signals and voltage paths and in the analysis of waveform characteristics such as timing, duration, frequency, and phasing; analyze test set-ups to isolate malfunctions and check performance characteristics of special or one of a kind test set ups; ability to use a variety of hand and power tools to accomplish incidental repairs. 4. Ability to work closely with others, communicate effectively, both orally and in writing. 5. Ability to document the calibration process; accurately prepare and affix calibration labels and note "as found" & "as returned" condition; identify "Out Of Tolerance" conditions and the extent of deviations encountered during the calibration process; ability to understand and document measurement uncertainty in accordance with national and international standards. 6. Knowledge of safety regulations and procedures. Skill in using and maintaining hand tools and power tools; such as drills, chassis punches, wrenches, soldering irons and micro-soldering units to remove and replace circuit parts. Physical Effort Frequently lifts and carries, unassisted, items weighing up to 50 pounds. Sometimes required to lift and carry items weighing more than 50 pounds with the help of weight handling equipment or with assistance from other workers. The work requires working in a sitting position for extended periods of time, and frequent standing, walking, bending, crouching, reaching, and stooping are required. Some work may require the aid of magnifying lenses, eye loops, and microscopes to accomplish repairs on miniature components. Working Conditions Employee typically works in well-lighted, heated, and ventilated areas. May be required to work at remote user locations under variable conditions or within clean room environments where special garments including head coverings, shoe coverings, and gloves are required. Exposed to the possibility of electric shock; burns from electrical or RF energy or hot solder; and cuts and bruises. PART-TIME OR UNPAID EXPERIENCE: Credit will be given for appropriate unpaid and or part-time work. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week. VOLUNTEER WORK EXPERIENCE: Refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service Programs (i.e., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student and social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge and skills that can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
